Rasmus Højlund praises Napoli life after Manchester United exit

Rasmus Højlund has spoken openly about his summer exit from Manchester United, praising the family atmosphere he has found at Napoli while refusing to criticise his former club. The 22-year-old striker joined the Italian side on loan and has made an immediate impact, scoring on his debut against Fiorentina and starting against Manchester City and Pisa.

Speaking to La Repubblica, Højlund described life in Naples as the right step for his career at this stage. “There’s a special football culture here. The fans were crazy and passionate, which makes them different from the others. The city is beautiful, the climate wonderful. But above all, I found a family atmosphere, just what I needed at this point in my career.”

Højlund has returned to familiar ground after his time at Atalanta and admits Serie A suits him. “It’s still the same as I remembered it from the season with Atalanta. The football here is very tactical, there are a lot of man-to-man duels. In the Premier League, the pace is a bit higher — everyone is quick, strong, and physically explosive. At 22, I already have a lot of experience behind me. But now I’m in Naples and I plan to stay.”

His comments suggest he is keen to extend his stay beyond the loan, with Napoli coach Antonio Conte also keen to integrate him fully into his system.

Conte has placed special emphasis on helping Højlund adapt linguistically and tactically. The striker admitted his Italian is still a work in progress: “He knows I need to improve my Italian, and he’s constantly asking me, worried about making himself understood. ‘Is it clear? Is it clear?’ are the words he uses most often with me. I always say yes, but if I have any doubts, I ask my teammates.”

That focus on communication is part of Conte’s wider effort to bring out the best in the Dane, who is already benefiting from a more stable environment than his final months at Old Trafford.

Despite being pushed out following the arrival of Benjamin Šeško and his exclusion from the squad against Arsenal by manager Ruben Amorim, Højlund made it clear he holds no resentment towards Manchester United. He admitted he was initially hesitant to leave, but now sees the move as a blessing in disguise.

His refusal to speak negatively about his former club reflects his professionalism and maturity — qualities that have impressed both Napoli fans and pundits.

“Højlund has walked into an environment where he feels valued and supported. That’s crucial after a difficult final season at Manchester United. He added: “What stands out is his maturity. Despite being sidelined at United, he’s refused to criticise the club. That professionalism bodes well for his future — whether it’s in Naples or elsewhere.”

Napoli will continue to rely on Højlund in both Serie A and Europe, with Conte determined to shape him into a long-term attacking leader. If his development continues, a permanent deal could be agreed before the end of the season.

For Manchester United, Højlund’s departure underlines the ruthlessness of their rebuild under Amorim. But should he flourish in Naples, questions will inevitably be asked about whether the club gave up too early.
