Aston Villa given Pedro Gonçalves opportunity despite Ruben Amorim interest

Aston Villa's pursuit of Pedro Gonçalves may have encountered fresh competition, but developments in Italy could ultimately strengthen their chances of landing the Sporting CP attacker.

Portuguese newspaper Record reports that new Milan manager Ruben Amorim has identified Gonçalves as a potential signing and has already discussed the player internally with club officials. The Portuguese coach reportedly views the 27-year-old as an ideal fit for the 3-4-3 system that delivered significant success during their time together at Sporting.

While that creates another rival in the race for the versatile forward, the wider picture suggests a transfer remains far from certain.

Amorim's appreciation of Gonçalves is well established.

Back in September 2024, while still in charge of Sporting, the coach openly admitted that the attacker would be one of the first players he would attempt to sign if he managed elsewhere in the future.

Those plans never materialised during his subsequent spell at Manchester United, but his arrival in Milan appears to have revived the idea.

The relationship between the pair remains particularly strong. Gonçalves has previously described Amorim as being "like a father", and Record reports the Sporting player is aware of Milan's interest and would be open to a reunion.

However, admiration alone may not be enough to make a deal happen.

According to the report, Milan have not yet opened talks with Sporting and remain in the evaluation stage.

The biggest obstacle is financial.

Sporting are reportedly willing to sell this summer but continue to value Gonçalves between €30 million and €35 million. Milan are still debating whether committing that level of investment to a 27-year-old represents the best use of their resources, particularly given the player's limited resale potential compared with younger targets.

That caution is understandable.

After finishing fifth in Serie A, Milan will not benefit from Champions League revenue next season, forcing the club to be more selective in the transfer market.

By contrast, Aston Villa have consistently shown a willingness to invest in established players capable of making an immediate impact. From recent transfer windows, Villa's recruitment strategy under Unai Emery has often prioritised proven quality over future resale value when the opportunity fits the manager's plans.

That dynamic could become increasingly important if Sporting decide to actively market Gonçalves during the summer.

One factor that could alter Milan's position is the future of Rafael Leão.

Record reports that the Portuguese international is interested in leaving San Siro this summer. A significant sale would provide Milan with additional financial flexibility and potentially allow Amorim to push harder for his preferred targets.

Until such movement occurs, however, the Rossoneri's interest appears to be driven primarily by the manager rather than a fully approved transfer strategy.

That uncertainty leaves room for rivals.

Interestingly, another Portuguese outlet, A Bola, recently suggested that the most realistic destination for Gonçalves would be a club competing regularly for European qualification without belonging to Europe's traditional elite.

That description arguably aligns more closely with Aston Villa's current position than Milan's.

The next stage is likely to revolve around Milan's outgoing business, particularly the future of Rafael Leão. If a major sale is completed, Amorim's chances of securing Gonçalves would increase considerably.

For Aston Villa, the situation may be one to monitor closely rather than react to immediately. Sporting's willingness to negotiate means interested clubs are unlikely to face the resistance encountered in previous windows. Should Villa decide Gonçalves remains a priority target, the coming weeks could offer a clearer path than initially expected.
