Patrick Dorgu has admitted he would prefer to settle into one position at Manchester United after once again being asked to perform several different roles.
The Denmark international has remained involved under Michael Carrick this season, making six appearances across all competitions. However, those outings have been evenly divided between left-back and left wing.
Versatility has become a major feature of Dorgu's United career, but the 21-year-old believes having a fixed role would make his development easier.
Dorgu wants to establish himself at left-back
Speaking to Tipsbladet, Dorgu explained that he is happy to play wherever Carrick needs him but would ideally like greater positional consistency.
“I’d prefer to have one fixed position,” Dorgu said. “It makes things easier to work on during training.”
Across his 54 Manchester United appearances, Dorgu has operated at left-back, left wing, left midfield and on the right side.
Asked which position feels most comfortable, his answer was clear.
“I started my professional career as a left-back, so that feels most natural to me,” he explained, while adding that he remains comfortable playing further forward.
For Carrick, that flexibility provides useful tactical options. For Dorgu, however, establishing one specialist role could help him take another step in his development.
Rashford, Shaw and Cunha increase competition
Winning that position will not be straightforward.
Dorgu highlighted Luke Shaw, Marcus Rashford and Matheus Cunha when discussing the competition he faces for minutes on United's left side.
Rashford has returned following his spell at Barcelona, while Dorgu noted that Cunha performed strongly during the period in which the Dane was injured.
“There are three really good players who have done well in the Premier League,” Dorgu said.
Rather than viewing that competition negatively, he believes it can improve him.
“It’s a challenge, but competing against such good players is also what can make me a better footballer.”
His immediate objective is therefore straightforward: take his opportunities and convince Carrick that he can be trusted regularly, preferably in the left-back position he considers his natural role.
