Newcastle United are closing in on the signing of Gençlerbirliği youngster Ousmane Diabate, with personal terms already agreed and a clear development plan in place for the 18-year-old.

The highly-rated defender is expected to sign a four-year contract with the option of an additional season at St James' Park.

According to Turkish journalist Reşat Can Özbudak, Diabate has already agreed those terms and is travelling to the North East to undergo his medical and complete the remaining formalities.

Newcastle move quickly for Ousmane Diabate

Newcastle's pursuit has developed rapidly.

The Magpies recently opened negotiations for the teenager amid interest from elsewhere in the Premier League, with Tottenham and Brentford also credited with serious interest.

Newcastle have now moved ahead of the competition.

Diabate only joined Gençlerbirliği earlier this year after arriving from Guinean side Académie SOAR, but his progress has been rapid enough to attract attention from England.

He has featured at both youth and senior level in Turkey and also made his senior Guinea debut in June.

Now Newcastle appear ready to secure his long-term future before allowing his development to continue in familiar surroundings.

Newcastle already have loan plan in place

Diabate is not expected to immediately become part of Matthias Jaissle's first-team squad.

Instead, Newcastle's plan is to sign him permanently before sending him back to Gençlerbirliği on loan for the remainder of the season.

Importantly, that agreement is expected to contain a January recall clause.

That gives Newcastle the opportunity to assess his progress midway through the campaign. If Diabate is playing regularly and developing as expected, he can remain in Turkey. If circumstances change, the Magpies can bring him back and reconsider the next step.

Gençlerbirliği could also receive additional bonuses depending on the youngster's playing time during the loan.

That structure gives the Turkish club an incentive to provide Diabate with regular senior football while allowing Newcastle to retain control over his development.

Newcastle continue major youth recruitment drive

Diabate's expected arrival is another indication of Newcastle's changing recruitment strategy under Jaissle.

The Magpies have increasingly targeted young players with significant development potential rather than focusing exclusively on established first-team additions.

Diabate follows Bazoumana Toure, Aladji Bamba, Sean Steur and Ewen Jaouen as part of that youth-focused recruitment drive.

The objective appears to be building a group of high-upside talents who can either develop into Newcastle first-team players or significantly increase their market value.

Diabate fits that model perfectly at just 18.

Key Points

  • Diabate has agreed a four-year Newcastle contract with an option for another year.
  • The 18-year-old is expected to undergo a medical before completing the transfer.
  • Newcastle plan to immediately loan him back to Gençlerbirliği for the season.
  • The loan will reportedly contain a mid-season recall option.
  • Diabate becomes another part of Newcastle's growing youth-focused recruitment strategy.

What's Next?

The remaining steps are Diabate's medical and the completion of the transfer paperwork.

Once everything is signed, Newcastle are expected to send him straight back to Gençlerbirliği, where regular senior football should provide the next stage of his development.

The January recall clause means Newcastle can keep close control of that process before deciding whether the youngster is ready for another challenge.
