Fenerbahçe are reportedly monitoring Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins as they search for attacking reinforcements this summer, although a deal currently appears difficult to imagine.

According to Turkish journalist Ertan Süzgün, the Istanbul club are "quietly pursuing" the England international behind the scenes as part of their plans to strengthen the squad.

However, while interest may exist, the realities of the transfer market suggest there is a considerable gap between admiration and a realistic deal.

Fenerbahçe searching for a proven goalscorer

Strengthening the forward line has become a priority for Fenerbahçe ahead of the new season.

The Turkish giants are expected to complete the permanent signing of Sidiki Cherif next month following his loan spell, but the striker managed just three goals in 16 appearances during the previous campaign.

That return has reportedly encouraged club officials to explore alternative options capable of delivering a greater goal threat.

Watkins undoubtedly fits that profile.

Having established himself as one of the Premier League's most consistent forwards, the Aston Villa star has attracted admiration from across Europe over the past few seasons.

The latest claims suggest Fenerbahçe have quietly begun exploring the possibility of a move, although no details have emerged regarding potential transfer fees or negotiations.

Aston Villa hold all the cards

The biggest obstacle is Aston Villa’s position.

Watkins remains one of Unai Emery’s most important players and continues to lead the line for a team competing at the upper end of the Premier League.

The striker enjoyed another productive campaign in 2025/26, contributing 21 goals across all competitions and once again demonstrating why he is regarded as one of England’s most reliable attacking players.

Given that level of importance, Villa have little incentive to consider a sale.
The England international is also under contract until 2028, further strengthening the club’s negotiating position.

While Transfermarkt currently values Watkins at around €25 million, any real-world transfer fee would likely be significantly higher.

Financial challenge appears substantial

The economics of the deal create another major hurdle.

Villa would almost certainly demand a fee well above Watkins' market valuation, particularly given his importance to the squad and lack of contractual pressure.

Reports suggest a figure exceeding €50 million would be more realistic before Villa even considered entering negotiations.

For Fenerbahçe, that would represent an extraordinary investment.

The club's transfer history illustrates the challenge. Their record signing remains Matteo Guendouzi at approximately €28 million, while the permanent acquisition of Cherif for €18 million ranks among their biggest investments in a striker.

Breaking those records by a considerable margin for a 30-year-old forward appears unlikely.

Key Points

  • Fenerbahçe are reportedly monitoring Ollie Watkins.
  • The Turkish club want to strengthen their attack this summer.
  • Watkins scored 21 goals during the 2025/26 season.
  • Aston Villa view him as a key player under Unai Emery.
  • The striker is contracted until 2028.
  • A transfer fee would likely far exceed Fenerbahçe's previous record signings.

What’s Next?

Unless Fenerbahçe are prepared to make a record-breaking financial commitment, the prospect of signing Watkins appears remote. Aston Villa remain in a strong position and have no obvious reason to entertain offers for one of their most important players.

For now, the story appears to be one of interest rather than active negotiations. As the transfer window progresses, attention may turn towards more realistic targets for Fenerbahçe, while Villa will expect Watkins to remain a central figure in their plans for the season ahead.

Would Aston Villa be able to replace Ollie Watkins if a huge offer arrived, or is he simply too important to Unai Emery's project?
