Arsenal have reportedly been offered the opportunity to sign Julián Álvarez this summer as Atlético Madrid attempt to prevent the Argentine from securing his preferred move to Barcelona.

The striker has emerged as one of the biggest names in the transfer market after making it clear he is open to leaving Atlético. However, while the player appears determined to join Barcelona, his current club are doing everything possible to stop that scenario from becoming reality.

According to Sport, Atlético have even explored alternative destinations for the 26-year-old, including an approach to Arsenal.

Julián Álvarez pushing for Barcelona move

The central issue appears to be the player's desire to remain in Spain while taking the next step in his career.

Recent comments from Álvarez have been interpreted as an attempt to accelerate a transfer away from Atlético Madrid, with Barcelona understood to be his preferred destination.

The problem for the striker is that Atlético have little interest in strengthening one of their direct rivals.

Relations between the two clubs are reportedly strained, and the Madrid side are reluctant to negotiate a deal that would see one of their biggest stars move to Camp Nou.

The report even claims Atlético are considering making a complaint to FIFA regarding alleged contact between Barcelona and the player's representatives.

Whether that happens remains to be seen, but it highlights the tension surrounding the situation.

Arsenal offered as alternative solution

Rather than selling to Barcelona, Atlético are reportedly exploring options elsewhere.

Sport claim the Spanish club proposed a deal involving Arsenal, with discussions centred around a package worth €60 million plus Viktor Gyökeres.

That approach was designed to provide Atlético with a high-profile replacement while removing the possibility of strengthening a domestic rival.

However, the proposal never gained real momentum.

According to the report, Álvarez immediately rejected the idea of moving to Arsenal.

Once the player's position became clear, Arsenal also stepped away from the possibility of a deal.

PSG could emerge as alternative

With Arsenal no longer considered a realistic option, attention may now shift towards Paris Saint-Germain.

The Champions League winners are reportedly monitoring the situation and could become more active if Gonçalo Ramos leaves the club during the current transfer window.

Unlike Barcelona, PSG would not present Atlético with the problem of strengthening a direct domestic rival.

However, there is still no indication that the French side have submitted a formal proposal.

That leaves the situation at a standstill.

Atlético facing difficult balancing act

From Atlético's perspective, the challenge is obvious.

They have a player who appears keen to leave and a preferred destination they are reluctant to negotiate with.

At the same time, alternative clubs are struggling to convince Álvarez because of his desire to continue his career in Spain.

Having followed similar transfer sagas in recent years, those circumstances often lead to lengthy negotiations as clubs attempt to find a compromise that satisfies all parties.

However, it remains too early to predict the outcome. Barcelona remain interested, Atlético remain resistant, and Álvarez appears unwilling to consider many alternatives.

Key Points

  • Atlético Madrid reportedly offered Julián Álvarez to Arsenal.
  • The striker is believed to prefer a move to Barcelona.
  • Arsenal were linked to a proposed deal involving Viktor Gyökeres.
  • Álvarez reportedly rejected the possibility of joining the Gunners.
  • PSG are monitoring the situation.
  • Atlético are reluctant to sell to a direct La Liga rival.

What’s Next?

The next stage may depend on whether Barcelona can convince Atlético Madrid to soften their position. At present, the Spanish club remain determined to avoid selling one of their key players to a domestic rival.

If that stance remains unchanged, PSG could emerge as the strongest alternative. For now, though, the biggest obstacle remains the player's own preference, with Álvarez continuing to prioritise a move to Barcelona over every other option currently available.

Should Arsenal have pushed harder for Julián Álvarez, or was stepping away the right decision given the player's clear preference for Barcelona?
