Crystal Palace revive defensive search with Atalanta’s Odilon Kossounou on shortlist

Crystal Palace have added Atalanta defender Odilon Kossounou to their shortlist as they continue the search for defensive reinforcements ahead of the new Premier League season.

The Eagles are expected to prioritise a new centre-back following Maxence Lacroix's impending move to Chelsea, and Kossounou has emerged as one of the leading candidates after previously attracting interest from Newcastle United.

While no formal offer has yet been submitted, Palace are reportedly giving serious consideration to making their move.

According to Africa Foot, Crystal Palace have shown "strong interest" in Kossounou after cooling their pursuit of Augsburg defender Chrislain Matsima.

The London club are also working on a deal for Brest centre-back Raphaël Le Guen, but Kossounou remains firmly on their radar as they assess multiple defensive options.

Unlike Newcastle, who were previously linked with the Ivory Coast international but never followed up their interest with a formal approach, Palace appear prepared to take the next step.

Kossounou's versatility is understood to be a key reason behind Palace's interest.

The 25-year-old is capable of playing in both a back three and a traditional four-man defence, while his athleticism and physical presence make him well suited to the demands of the Premier League.

The defender joined Atalanta on a long-term contract that runs until 2029, placing the Serie A club in a strong negotiating position should Palace decide to formalise their interest.

Although his current market valuation stands at around €15 million, Atalanta are expected to demand considerably more if they agree to sell this summer.

Crystal Palace may also face competition if Newcastle revive their previous interest.

The Magpies identified Kossounou as a potential defensive target earlier this year, although they never progressed to formal negotiations.

Africa Foot warns that Newcastle, or another interested club, could yet re-enter the race before the transfer window closes, potentially increasing competition for the defender's signature.

For now, Palace are weighing up whether to submit an official offer as they continue reshaping their defence following Lacroix's expected departure.
