Nottingham Forest working on late deal for Newcastle winger Jacob Murphy

Nottingham Forest are working on a late deal to sign Newcastle United winger Jacob Murphy before the summer transfer window closes.

The 31-year-old has entered the final year of his Newcastle contract and is yet to start a Premier League match this season, appearing from the bench in both of the Magpies' opening fixtures.

With Anthony Elanga establishing himself on the right side of Newcastle's attack, Murphy's opportunities could become increasingly limited, potentially opening the door to a move to the City Ground.

Forest are looking to strengthen Oliver Glasner's squad during the final two days of the window and have identified Murphy as a potential attacking addition.

The experienced winger enjoyed an excellent 2024/25 campaign, registering 23 goals and assists across 41 appearances, although he struggled to reproduce those numbers last season.

His current situation at Newcastle could make a transfer achievable.

Murphy's contract is due to expire next summer, meaning Newcastle are approaching one of their final opportunities to receive a fee rather than risk losing him for nothing.

His reduced role during the opening weeks of the campaign further raises questions about his position in Matthias Jaissle's squad.

Murphy has been unable to force his way into Newcastle's starting XI during the first two Premier League matches.

Elanga's impressive performances on the right have increased the competition facing the former Norwich City player, who would potentially receive greater opportunities at Forest.

For Newcastle, a late sale would also represent another significant change to a squad that has already undergone considerable restructuring this summer.

No potential transfer fee or contractual terms have yet been disclosed, with Forest currently described as working on the deal.

Forest's interest comes after a mixed start to the new campaign.

Glasner's side lost their Premier League opener against Leeds United before suffering another defeat against the Yorkshire club in the Carabao Cup.

There were considerably more encouraging signs in their second league fixture as Forest earned a 2-2 draw against Liverpool at Anfield.

Further attacking depth nevertheless remains on the agenda following Dilane Bakwa's loan departure to Lille.

Murphy's versatility could appeal to Glasner, particularly because of the demands of his 3-4-2-1 system.

Although naturally a winger, Murphy's defensive work rate and ability to cover significant ground could make him an option at right wing-back, while he could also provide a more direct attacking alternative when Forest change shape.

That versatility, combined with his Premier League experience, could make him an attractive late-window addition.

Forest have little time remaining to turn their interest into an agreement, with negotiations needing to progress quickly before the window closes.

Newcastle must also decide whether to cash in on Murphy while they still can or retain an experienced squad option for the final year of his contract.
