Nottingham Forest have reportedly moved into pole position to sign Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones after reaching an agreement with the Reds.

The England international had also attracted strong interest from Inter Milan, but the Serie A champions now appear set to miss out after Forest accelerated negotiations.

While the reported agreement still requires further confirmation, the City Ground club have seemingly taken advantage of the lack of progress between Liverpool and Inter.

Nottingham Forest move ahead in Curtis Jones race

Inter had identified Jones as a priority midfield target after failing to sign him during the winter transfer window.

Liverpool refused to entertain a sale at the time, but the midfielder's contract situation has changed the landscape this summer. Jones has less than 12 months remaining on his current deal and is reportedly not planning to sign an extension.

Inter sporting director Piero Ausilio recently admitted negotiations were proving difficult because of Liverpool’s valuation.

“Right now there’s a significant gap between our assessments and Liverpool’s,” Ausilio explained.

He added that the transfer currently looked “very difficult”.

Forest have reportedly capitalised on that stalemate.

Liverpool agreement puts Forest in control

According to Corriere dello Sport, Liverpool have now reached an agreement with Nottingham Forest for Jones.

The report does not reveal the financial details of the proposed deal, but claims the midfielder is now closer to moving to the City Ground than to San Siro.

Inter’s pursuit has also been slowed by the need to offload midfielders before making another signing, creating an opportunity Forest have moved quickly to exploit.

Should the move be completed, it would represent another ambitious signing as Forest continue strengthening Oliver Glasner’s squad ahead of the new season.

Inter likely to turn attention elsewhere

If Jones completes a move to Nottingham Forest, Inter will be forced to explore alternative midfield targets.

The Italian champions had remained interested throughout the summer, but their inability to bridge the valuation gap with Liverpool has allowed Forest to move into a commanding position.

The report from Italy has yet to be independently confirmed elsewhere, so the final stages of the transfer will be worth watching closely over the coming days.

Key points

  • Nottingham Forest have reportedly reached an agreement with Liverpool for Curtis Jones.
  • Inter Milan had also been pursuing the England midfielder.
  • Jones has less than one year remaining on his Liverpool contract.
  • Inter previously admitted there was a major gap in valuations.
  • No transfer fee has yet been reported.
  • The move still awaits further confirmation.

What’s next?

Attention now turns to whether the reported agreement is followed by official confirmation from the clubs involved.

If Jones completes the move, Nottingham Forest will have beaten Inter to one of their priority midfield targets, while the Serie A champions will be forced back into the transfer market for an alternative.

Would Curtis Jones be a statement signing for Nottingham Forest?

Jones would an excellent signing for Forest. He's a tidy, energetic midfielder who can hold or play further forward. Obviously he's not Anderson, but with Sangare and/or Dominguez playing alongside, he really would add value. His versatility (to play right back in extremis) only adds to the attraction.

I do agree but I think 40M is a bit to much.

If you can get him to pass up field he may prove a hit. Too slow, backwards and sideways movement all the time. 91% pass rate is easy to achieve passing the ball 10 yards.
