Former Manchester United captain Ashley Young has accused the club's players of giving up on Michael Carrick following Sunday's 3–0 Premier League defeat to Bournemouth.
Goals from Rayan, Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson condemned United to an eighth consecutive match without victory, leaving them 16th in the table and increasing the pressure on Carrick.
Young, who played alongside the United manager at Old Trafford, believes the players have failed to show the commitment needed during a difficult period.
Young questions Manchester United players' commitment
Speaking to Sky Sports after the defeat, Young expressed his disappointment at seeing his former teammate struggling.
"It's disappointing to see Michael like this," he said.
"I wish there were players who knew the club and loved it as much as he does."
Young was particularly critical of United's lack of intensity and organisation against Bournemouth, suggesting the squad was no longer responding to Carrick.
"You could clearly see today that they had given up. They didn't want to fight for this manager anymore," Young added.
His assessment came after another poor performance in which Bournemouth repeatedly exposed United's defensive weaknesses.
Carrick's future comes under increasing pressure
The defeat followed United's 4–1 Champions League loss to Como and left Carrick facing serious questions about his position.
Young suggested the former midfielder understood the significance of the result.
"The players might look dejected, but I think Michael knows the end is near," he said.
The former England international also questioned why repeated managerial changes had failed to produce a sustained improvement.
"There have been several managers over the past few seasons, but it's always the same players," he explained.
Although United have made several squad changes, Young believes the players must accept greater responsibility for their performances.
Carrick has acknowledged the pressure but has not publicly confirmed that he expects to leave the club.
Old Trafford supporters show Carrick their backing
Despite the heavy defeat, United supporters applauded Carrick as he walked around the pitch after the final whistle.
Their reaction contrasted sharply with the boos directed towards the players.
Young sympathised with the frustration among the Old Trafford crowd.
"The fans deserve so much more," he said.
The former United captain believes supporters recognise Carrick's connection to the club and feel the squad has let him down.
