Aston Villa have been handed a major boost in their pursuit of Nicolas Jackson, with Atletico Madrid reportedly withdrawing from the race for the Chelsea striker.
Villa have been negotiating over the 25-year-old as Unai Emery looks to strengthen his attacking options before the transfer deadline.
Atletico had emerged as serious competition, but disagreements over the structure of a deal and Jackson's growing openness towards Villa have now pushed the Spanish club away.
Atletico Madrid drop Jackson pursuit
According to Mundo Deportivo, Atletico encountered two major obstacles in their attempt to sign Jackson.
The first is Chelsea's preference for a permanent transfer.
Atletico wanted to take the Senegal international on loan, but Chelsea are looking to sell. The Blues originally invested around €37m in Jackson and want to make a profit on that investment.
The second obstacle is Aston Villa.
Villa's interest is described as a major problem for Atletico, with Emery's side better positioned to offer Chelsea the type of permanent agreement they are seeking.
Faced with those difficulties, Atletico have reportedly decided to abandon their pursuit.
Emery could be decisive for Jackson
Jackson had initially been attracted by the possibility of returning to Spain.
He played for Villarreal before joining Chelsea in 2023 and was open to working under Diego Simeone at Atletico.
However, Villa have one major advantage: Unai Emery.
Emery handed Jackson his first-team debut at Villarreal in 2021 and already knows the striker well. Jackson made 27 appearances under the Villa manager, scoring three goals and providing three assists.
Mundo Deportivo reports that Jackson would now also welcome a move to Villa Park, with the confidence and trust Emery could provide playing an important role in his thinking.
That change in stance has strengthened Villa's position considerably.
Chelsea agreement now key for Villa
With Atletico stepping away, Villa appear to have a much clearer route towards Jackson.
The main obstacle is now reaching an agreement with Chelsea.
Jackson is not part of Chelsea's plans and the Blues are prepared to sanction his departure, but they would prefer a permanent sale rather than another loan.
That means Villa will need to meet Chelsea's financial expectations before Emery can reunite with his former Villarreal striker.
