Nick Woltemade has been handed a clear challenge by Luciano Spalletti following his loan move from Newcastle United to Juventus, with the Italian coach outlining how the striker will need to adapt his game in Turin.

The German joined Juventus on a straight loan after the Serie A giants moved away from their interest in Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee.

Woltemade’s arrival has generated excitement in Italy, but Spalletti believes the Newcastle loanee must become more accustomed to operating as a physical presence inside the penalty area.

Juventus turned to Woltemade after Zirkzee interest

Juventus initially considered Zirkzee as they looked to strengthen their attacking options.

However, Spalletti wanted a striker capable of providing a stronger presence inside the box, and the Manchester United forward was ultimately considered unsuitable for what the coach required.

That prompted Juventus to accelerate their pursuit of Woltemade.

Newcastle were willing to sanction his departure on favourable terms, allowing Juventus to secure the German on loan as Jonathan David headed to Atletico Madrid.

Spalletti explains Juventus transfer strategy

Spalletti believes Juventus have strengthened their squad with players capable of coping with the speed and physical demands he wants from his team.

“Our directors have been excellent at fitting into the right contexts and adapting to what the market has to offer,” Spalletti said.

“We’ve covered our positional needs and brought in several players.

“Bringing in players accustomed to playing fast-paced, physical football, where thinking time is significantly reduced, will raise the level of our team.”

Woltemade’s physical attributes clearly played a role in convincing Juventus that he could provide what they were missing.

Woltemade already impressing with his attitude

Spalletti has also been encouraged by the 24-year-old’s personality since his arrival.

“He’s good at holding his own physically, and ever since I met him, he’s been smiling constantly,” he said.

“He’s so happy to be here, and that’s already a big thing.”

That enthusiasm should help Woltemade as he adjusts to a new league and a different tactical role.

Spalletti wants more from Woltemade inside the box

The biggest challenge concerns how Juventus intend to use the Newcastle striker.

Woltemade enjoys dropping deeper and becoming involved in build-up play, but Spalletti wants him to develop the qualities required to operate closer to goal.

“He’s physically strong, so heading and finishing inside the box are skills that, whether he likes it or not, he’ll have to learn by heart, because he loves coming to play football,” Spalletti explained.

That could require Woltemade to spend more time occupying defenders and attacking crosses rather than continually dropping away from the penalty area looking for possession.

His technical qualities could still prove useful in a deeper attacking position, particularly given Spalletti has previously used a striker behind another forward.

However, with Randal Kolo Muani currently preferred through the middle and Kenan Yildiz another option in attacking midfield, Woltemade may need to demonstrate that he can perform several different roles.

Key Points

  • Nick Woltemade has joined Juventus on loan from Newcastle United.
  • Juventus moved for the German after deciding Joshua Zirkzee did not fit Spalletti’s requirements.
  • Spalletti has been impressed by Woltemade’s physical qualities and positive attitude.
  • The Juventus coach wants him to improve his heading and finishing inside the penalty area.
  • Woltemade may need to adapt from dropping deep to operating as a more traditional target man.

What’s Next?

Woltemade must now adapt to Spalletti’s tactical demands as he competes for an attacking role at Juventus.

His ability on the ball gives the Italian coach flexibility, but improving his movement, heading and finishing inside the penalty area could determine how regularly he features as a centre-forward.

For Newcastle, the loan provides an opportunity for Woltemade to add another dimension to his game before returning to his parent club. If he becomes a more effective penalty-box presence in Turin, Juventus’ demands could ultimately benefit both the player and Newcastle.
