Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott has faced severe criticism from the Spanish media after receiving two yellow cards in quick succession during Valencia's dramatic 2–1 defeat to Villarreal.

The 23-year-old was dismissed in the 89th minute at Mestalla after protesting to the referee, with Georges Mikautadze scoring Villarreal's winner deep into stoppage time.

Elliott receives harsh Spanish media ratings

Elliott entered the match in the 70th minute, replacing Javi Guerra, but his appearance ended prematurely following two bookings for dissent.

Superdeporte and Plaza Deportiva reportedly awarded the Liverpool loanee zero out of ten, while ElDesmarque gave him just 1/10.

The dismissal proved particularly frustrating because Villarreal midfielder Pape Gueye had already been sent off for violent conduct in the 79th minute.

Elliott's red card removed Valencia's numerical advantage with the scores level at 1–1.

Aguirre criticises costly dismissal

Valencia manager Javier Aguirre expressed frustration with Elliott's decision to protest but accepted responsibility for the result.

The Mexican described the dismissal as unnecessary and indicated that he would discuss the incident privately with the midfielder.

Valencia had taken the lead through Pepelu's first-half penalty before Alex Freeman equalised for Villarreal.

Mikautadze then struck in the 96th minute to secure a dramatic away victory.

Liverpool loanee faces further setback

Elliott joined Valencia on loan after a difficult spell at Aston Villa last season, hoping to secure more regular playing time.

However, he has struggled to establish himself in a Valencia side battling near the bottom of La Liga.
