Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer has faced criticism following his dismissal against Tottenham Hotspur, with his non-penalty goalscoring record against traditional Premier League rivals also attracting attention.
The 24-year-old received two yellow cards during Saturday's 2–0 defeat at Stamford Bridge, as Tottenham secured victory through a Mike Penders own goal and Mathys Tel's late strike.
Palmer's big-six record questioned
According to StatMuse, Palmer has scored just two non-penalty goals in 25 Premier League appearances against traditional big-six opponents, both against Manchester United.
His latest blank against Tottenham added to the debate surrounding his performances in major fixtures.
Palmer received his first booking in the 71st minute following an off-the-ball confrontation with Mateus Fernandes.
Nine minutes later, he was dismissed after catching Conor Gallagher during a challenge.
talkSPORT pundits criticise Chelsea star
Speaking on talkSPORT, presenter Max Scott questioned Palmer's conduct and suggested his initial confrontation could have warranted a straight red card.
"Palmer needs to take a look at himself because he might be an absolutely wonderful player, but there are bubbling concerns about the attitude," Scott said.
Katie Shanahan also questioned Palmer's decision-making, while former Premier League striker Tony Cascarino suggested frustration can affect his judgement.
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso acknowledged that Palmer must learn from the incident.
Chelsea face Liverpool without Palmer
The midfielder's first senior red card means he will serve an automatic one-match suspension against Liverpool in Wednesday's Carabao Cup fourth-round tie.
However, he will be available for Chelsea's subsequent Premier League meeting with Manchester United.
