Newcastle United considering €60m move for Real Sociedad star Luka Sucic

Newcastle United are reportedly considering a major move for Real Sociedad midfielder Luka Sucic, whose contract contains a €60million release clause.

The 24-year-old has enjoyed an impressive start to the season in Spain, scoring twice in six appearances and increasingly attracting attention with his performances.

Sucic joined Real Sociedad from Red Bull Salzburg in 2024 for around €10m, meaning a transfer at his release-clause value would represent a huge profit for the La Liga club.

According to Spanish newspaper AS, Newcastle have been considering whether to activate Sucic’s €60m release clause.

Should Newcastle pay the clause and reach an agreement with the Croatia international, Real Sociedad would effectively be powerless to prevent the midfielder from leaving.

However, that does not necessarily mean Newcastle would need to activate the clause formally.

Real Sociedad could potentially accept a lower offer or negotiate a deal around the €60m figure that allows Newcastle to spread payments over several instalments.

That could make negotiations considerably more attractive than paying the entire release clause immediately.

One particularly interesting factor is Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle’s previous relationship with Sucic.

Jaissle worked with the midfielder during his time in charge of Red Bull Salzburg and therefore already knows what the Croatian can offer.

The Newcastle boss has also shown a willingness to reunite with players he has previously coached, adding another layer of credibility to the reported interest.

Sucic has meanwhile strengthened his reputation with some decisive contributions for Real Sociedad.

He recently scored a 90th-minute winner against Elche, while his other goal this season came against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Real Sociedad manager Pellegrino Matarazzo has plenty of faith in Sucic, but his growing reputation could make retaining him increasingly difficult.

Having paid around €10m for the midfielder two years ago, receiving his full €60m clause would generate approximately €50m in profit.

Newcastle will therefore have to decide whether Sucic represents sufficient value at that level or whether negotiations can bring the price down.

Real Sociedad’s upcoming Europa League clash with Bournemouth also presents Newcastle with an ideal opportunity to monitor the midfielder against Premier League opposition.

If Sucic continues his current trajectory, Newcastle may not be the only club considering a move.

Real Sociedad face Bournemouth in the Europa League on Thursday, giving Newcastle another opportunity to assess Sucic. His performances over the coming months could determine whether the Magpies turn their interest into a concrete January approach.
