Igor Jesus makes Nottingham Forest case with dramatic Aston Villa winner

Igor Jesus has strengthened his case for more Nottingham Forest minutes after coming off the bench to score the winner in Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Aston Villa.

The Brazilian struck in the 87th minute to secure Forest’s first Premier League victory of the season, needing only 13 minutes to make his impact after replacing Liam Delap.

Delap had earlier opened the scoring before Allyson equalised for Aston Villa, setting the stage for Igor Jesus to decide the contest late on.

Speaking after the victory, Igor Jesus admitted the goal carried extra significance after Forest’s difficult start to the campaign.

“It’s my first goal in the Premier League this season. We know how important that is for us,” he told Globo Esporte.

“We’ve got our first three points and I’m very happy to score my first Premier League goal and help my team get our first win.”

The winning goal also highlighted Forest’s work on the training ground.

Morgan Gibbs-White produced a clever backheel to create the opportunity before Igor Jesus converted and immediately celebrated with the travelling supporters.

“Every day at the club we try to do the same thing,” he explained. “We’re happy with the result. We fought all the time and took our opportunities.”

Igor Jesus entered the new campaign determined to improve after registering 21 goal contributions across 55 appearances last season.

His performances had attracted interest during the summer, with Forest rejecting approaches involving Tottenham, Porto and Juventus.

The club’s decision to retain him could now prove valuable, particularly with the Brazilian providing an immediate match-winning contribution from the bench.

However, competition for attacking minutes has increased significantly.

Forest signed Delap from Chelsea in a deal that could eventually reach £50million, with the striker agreeing a five-year contract.

Delap also scored his first Premier League goal for Forest against Villa, meaning both centre-forwards made their mark in the same match.

Asked directly about competing with Delap for a starting position, Igor Jesus insisted the situation should benefit Nottingham Forest.

“He’s a good player. It’s not about competition,” he said.

“It’s good for us because we have lots of quality players. We have to fight for the position, like we do every day in training.

“We’re happy because everyone gives their best every day. We’re together to win games.”

For Forest, having both strikers score in the same match represents an encouraging selection problem.

For Igor Jesus, meanwhile, delivering the winner from the bench is a strong argument for receiving more opportunities.

Igor Jesus will now hope his match-winning cameo earns him more minutes and potentially a starting opportunity. With both he and Delap getting on the scoresheet against Aston Villa, Forest have genuine competition for the central striker position.
