Newcastle United have reportedly agreed a £20 million deal to sign Ajax midfielder Seun Steur, with the teenager now preparing to complete his medical.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Ajax have accepted Newcastle’s offer and the 18-year-old has agreed to move to St James’ Park. The package is worth around £20 million including bonuses, giving Eddie Howe another highly rated young talent during an ambitious summer rebuild.

Steur has already left Ajax’s training camp ahead of the final stages of the transfer.

Newcastle agree Seun Steur transfer with Ajax

Steur broke into the Ajax first team during the 2025/26 season, making 19 Eredivisie appearances and registering one goal and one assist.

The central midfielder has built a reputation for his first touch, creativity and ability to play passes between defensive lines. Newcastle believe those qualities can add another dimension to their midfield while giving Steur time to develop.

Ajax had previously reached a preliminary agreement with the teenager over a new contract until 2030. However, the Dutch club reportedly refused to guarantee regular first-team minutes, opening the door for Newcastle to make their move.

The Magpies have now agreed a fee Ajax were prepared to accept, while Steur is expected to receive a significant salary increase in England.

Why Newcastle are investing £20m in Steur

The transfer represents a major investment in potential rather than proven top-level experience.

Steur has played only one full breakthrough season at senior level, but Newcastle are building a midfield that should allow the youngster to develop without immediately carrying the creative burden.

Howe already has options including Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton and Lewis Miley, while Newcastle are also pursuing SC Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi.

The Magpies have funds to reshape their squad following major summer departures and have already strengthened their attack with Bazoumana Touré.

What’s next?

Can Steur become Newcastle’s next major midfield star?

Big talent. I’ve watched the game against Panathinaikos a friendly and he played very well. Great signing.
