Newcastle United and Manchester United are reportedly leading the race for Benfica defender Daniel Banjaqui, with Barcelona and Inter Milan also monitoring the highly rated teenager.

The 18-year-old Portuguese full-back has attracted growing interest following his performances for Benfica and Portugal's Under-21 side, although a January transfer could prove expensive.

Newcastle and Manchester United step up Daniel Banjaqui interest

According to Portuguese newspaper O Jogo, Newcastle and Manchester United are among four clubs that have already gathered information about a potential move for Banjaqui.

Barcelona and Inter Milan are also understood to be actively monitoring the defender, creating significant competition ahead of the January transfer window.

Banjaqui made three senior appearances for Benfica last season, playing 155 minutes.

He has already matched that appearance total this campaign, increasing his playing time to 261 minutes.

His development has included an impressive 90-minute performance against AC Milan in the Europa League last month.

The teenager also strengthened his reputation during the international break by scoring for Portugal Under-21s against the Czech Republic.

Newcastle could benefit from their existing relationship with Benfica following the summer signing of Amar Dedic.

However, that connection is unlikely to guarantee an advantage over Manchester United or their European rivals.

Benfica could demand up to €50m for teenage defender

Benfica are reportedly willing to consider offers between €35million and €40million for Banjaqui, although no official asking price has been established.

The Portuguese club believe his valuation could increase significantly if he continues developing under manager Marco Silva.

That could eventually see Benfica demand more than €50million for the young defender.

Banjaqui signed a contract extension in April that keeps him at the club until 2031.

The agreement also includes an €80million release clause, leaving Benfica in a strong negotiating position.

With several major European clubs interested, the Portuguese side have little incentive to accept a reduced fee.

Neither Newcastle nor Manchester United have submitted a formal offer, but both clubs appear to be positioning themselves ahead of a potential transfer battle.
