Newcastle United could once again turn to Serie A to replace Sandro Tonali after the Italy international travelled to London to complete his medical ahead of a blockbuster move to Tottenham Hotspur.
With Tottenham expected to finalise a deal worth around €100 million, Newcastle are now preparing to identify a successor capable of filling the sizeable void left by one of their most influential midfielders.
Tonali closing in on Tottenham switch
According to Italian journalist Niccolò Ceccarini, Tonali flew to London on Wednesday to undergo medical tests before completing his transfer to Roberto De Zerbi's Tottenham side.
The move is expected to be formally completed in the coming days after both clubs reached an agreement earlier this week.
Tonali's departure will leave Newcastle searching for a midfielder capable of replicating his energy, technical quality and control in the centre of the pitch.
Serie A market could provide the answer
Speaking to Tuttomercatoweb, Ceccarini believes Newcastle could revisit the Italian market, just as they did when signing Tonali from AC Milan.
“The question is another, what will Newcastle do now? Will they decide to invest as they did with Tonali by fishing from the Italian championship? Or will they look for profiles in the same Premier League or elsewhere?” — Niccolò Ceccarini, Tuttomercatoweb
The journalist believes two Serie A midfielders could emerge as realistic options if Newcastle decide to return to Italy.
Frattesi and Fagioli named as potential targets
Ceccarini highlighted Inter Milan midfielder Davide Frattesi as a player well suited to the Premier League.
“I think we’ll have to pay close attention to what might happen in Italy.
“For example, a profile like Davide Frattesi could be of interest because he has the right characteristics to play in the Premier League.
“But also pay attention to Nicolò Fagioli. For a very high figure, Fiorentina could sell him.”
Both midfielders have been linked with moves abroad in recent transfer windows, although Newcastle have yet to make any formal approach.
