Aston Villa's pursuit of Flamengo defender Emerson Royal reportedly collapsed not because of finances, but because manager Leonardo Jardim stepped in to block the transfer.

Villa had increased their offer to around €10 million (£8.6m) in an attempt to bring the Brazilian full-back back to the Premier League. While Flamengo's board were reportedly prepared to accept the proposal, the move was ultimately halted for footballing reasons.

Leonardo Jardim vetoed the transfer

According to ESPN Brasil journalist Bruno Andrade, Flamengo’s president was willing to approve Emerson Royal’s departure before Jardim intervened.

“Leonardo Jardim himself stopped the negotiations. If it had been down to Flamengo’s presidency, Emerson Royal would already be an Aston Villa player.” — Bruno Andrade, ESPN Brasil

The report claims Jardim has made retaining the core of his squad one of his priorities during the current transfer window, even if that means rejecting sizeable offers for players who are not guaranteed starters every week.

Squad depth proved more important than the fee

Flamengo's decision was driven largely by concerns over defensive depth.

With uncertainty already surrounding the left-back position, the Brazilian club were reluctant to weaken the opposite flank by allowing Emerson Royal to leave, particularly as he serves as the main backup to Guillermo Varela.

Although Villa's improved offer met the expectations of Flamengo's hierarchy, Jardim believed losing another defensive option would leave his squad too exposed heading into the second half of the season.

Reports from Brazil also suggest there is growing concern within the club over the overall size of the squad, making further departures increasingly difficult unless replacements are secured.

Aston Villa left frustrated

From Aston Villa's perspective, the latest developments suggest negotiations failed because of sporting priorities rather than financial disagreements.

Having identified Emerson Royal as an experienced option capable of strengthening Unai Emery's defence, Villa appeared willing to meet Flamengo's valuation in an effort to complete the transfer quickly.

Aston Villa have consistently sought players with experience at the highest level who can immediately compete for first-team places. Emerson Royal's previous Premier League experience made him a logical target.

However, without Flamengo's coaching staff willing to sanction the sale, Villa were left with little room to progress discussions despite improving their proposal.

Key points

  • Aston Villa offered around €10 million for Emerson Royal.
  • Flamengo's board were reportedly willing to accept the bid.
  • Manager Leonardo Jardim blocked the transfer.
  • Flamengo prioritised maintaining defensive depth over raising transfer funds.
  • Villa may now need to pursue alternative right-back targets.

What's next?

Aston Villa are expected to turn their attention to other defensive targets after failing to secure Emerson Royal's signature.

Flamengo, meanwhile, are expected to continue protecting the core of Jardim's squad unless suitable replacements become available, with the Brazilian club prioritising stability over transfer income from senior first-team players.

Should Aston Villa return with another offer for Emerson Royal, or move on to alternative defensive targets this summer?
