Mykhailo Mudryk remains in football limbo nearly 18 months after his provisional suspension, with the latest fallout now extending beyond Chelsea and into the finances of his former club Shakhtar Donetsk.

Shakhtar chief executive Serhii Palkin has confirmed the Ukrainian club could miss out on €30 million in performance-related bonuses tied to Mudryk’s transfer if the winger does not return to action soon.

The 25-year-old has not played since November 2024 after being provisionally suspended by the Football Association following an adverse anti-doping test. He was formally charged in June 2025 and still awaits the outcome of his case. Reports indicate he could face a ban of up to four years if found guilty under FA regulations.

Why Shakhtar are watching closely

When Chelsea signed Mudryk in January 2023, the deal was structured with substantial add-ons.

The initial package was worth around €70 million, with a further €30 million linked to appearances, achievements and club success. That structure made the transfer one of the most lucrative in Ukrainian football history.

Now, much of that remains at risk.

Palkin has openly acknowledged the financial consequences, admitting Shakhtar are directly impacted by Mudryk’s absence because many of the clauses rely on Chelsea performance milestones and the player’s involvement.

For Shakhtar, this is not just about loyalty to a former player — it is about real financial planning.

Chelsea still waiting for clarity

Chelsea’s own situation remains complicated.

Mudryk continues individual training away from the first-team environment and is reportedly maintaining fitness while awaiting the outcome of the legal process.

His long-term contract at Stamford Bridge runs until 2031, meaning Chelsea still have a significant asset tied up in uncertainty.

The wider concern for Chelsea is squad planning.

Having followed Chelsea’s attacking structure over recent months, the left-sided balance has shifted significantly without Mudryk’s pace and direct running. While alternatives have emerged, his absence has removed a different attacking profile from the squad.

However, it remains too early to draw firm conclusions on whether his Chelsea career can resume.

What happens if the ban is lifted?

Palkin remains optimistic.

The Shakhtar executive has publicly backed Mudryk’s innocence and expects the situation to conclude positively, though there is still no official timeline for the final ruling.
That uncertainty remains the key issue.

Mudryk Chelsea Record Total
Appearances 73
Goals 10
Assists 11
Contract expiry 2031

The numbers show a player still early in his Chelsea journey, making the outcome even more significant for all parties involved.

Key insights

  • Mudryk has not played since November 2024
  • The FA formally charged him in June 2025
  • Shakhtar risk losing €30m in add-ons
  • Chelsea remain in limbo over his future
  • A verdict is still pending

What’s next?

The next major step will be the final disciplinary ruling, which could define both Mudryk’s short-term future and Chelsea’s wider transfer planning heading into next season.

If cleared, Chelsea would need to decide how quickly to reintegrate him into the squad after such a long absence. If the suspension becomes a full ban, Shakhtar’s bonus hopes could effectively disappear.

From a footballing and financial perspective, the coming decision may prove significant for both clubs.

Can Mudryk still rebuild his Chelsea career if he returns — or has the window already closed?
