Manchester United’s pursuit of Morten Hjulmand could receive a major boost, with the Sporting CP midfielder having already spoken highly of Ruben Amorim, his former manager in Lisbon.

United are targeting midfield reinforcements this summer, and Hjulmand is among the names near the top of the list. The 26-year-old Denmark international has shone since his £15.8m move from Lecce in 2023 and played a key role in back-to-back Primeira Liga titles under Amorim.

United Want Hjulmand – Amorim Connection Crucial

United have already submitted a £34m offer for Hjulmand, according to Calciomercato, though his release clause is believed to be £68m.

With Amorim now in charge at Old Trafford following Erik ten Hag’s departure in November, Hjulmand would be walking into a familiar setup — and by his own admission, he’d be happy to do so.

“I was sad that Ruben is leaving me and leaving Sporting… Of course, Ruben was one of the reasons why I came to Sporting. When you work with Ruben, you see a clear picture.” — Morten Hjulmand, May 2025

What Makes Hjulmand an Ideal Signing for United?

Hjulmand isn’t just a player who fits the system — he knows it inside out. At Sporting, he operated as a defensive anchor in Amorim’s midfield three, excelling in both ball-winning and distribution.

Having now worked under Amorim for two seasons and won two domestic titles, his transition to life at Old Trafford would likely be seamless.

  • Age: 26
  • 2024/25 Appearances: 41
  • Pass Completion: 89.7%
  • Tackles per 90: 2.8
  • Interceptions per 90: 1.5

The Denmark international also brings leadership and experience, having captained Lecce in Serie A before his move to Portugal.

Who Else Is Interested?

Hjulmand’s standout performances have attracted interest from several European clubs. Juventus have been monitoring his situation closely, while both Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur are also keeping tabs. However, it’s Manchester United who have made the first formal move, and with Ruben Amorim now in charge at Old Trafford, that existing relationship could prove decisive in securing the deal.

Analyst Verdict

Morten Hjulmand may not be a household name in England yet, but he’s exactly the type of profile Manchester United have lacked in midfield — intelligent in possession, positionally disciplined, and already attuned to Ruben Amorim’s tactical framework. At 26, he offers both maturity and room to grow. If United secure him below his £68m release clause, it could prove to be one of the smartest deals of their summer.

Key Insights

  • Hjulmand has already praised Amorim’s management style and clarity.
  • United have offered £34m – release clause is £68m.
  • The midfielder won two league titles under Amorim at Sporting.
  • Reuniting at United would suit both parties in terms of system fit.
  • Juventus, Spurs and Man City are monitoring – but have yet to bid.

What Do You Think?

Should Manchester United go all in for Morten Hjulmand — or should they prioritise a more Premier League-proven name?
