Leeds United agree Michael Zetterer deal – But goalkeeper is resisting Elland Road move

Leeds United have reportedly reached an agreement with Eintracht Frankfurt for Michael Zetterer, but the goalkeeper is currently standing in the way of the transfer.

Leeds have been searching for another goalkeeper after completing the £40million signing of James Trafford from Manchester City.

Trafford has arrived as Daniel Farke's clear number one, meaning any new goalkeeper would primarily provide competition and cover.

Zetterer has emerged as their main target, and according to BILD, Leeds and Frankfurt have now agreed terms for the 31-year-old.

There is just one major problem: Zetterer has not agreed to leave Frankfurt.

Frankfurt are reportedly looking to reshape their goalkeeping department because manager Adi Hütter is not completely convinced by either Zetterer or Kauã Santos.

Santos is currently considered more likely to remain, leaving Frankfurt focused on finding a destination for Zetterer.

That has opened the door for Leeds.

An agreement between the two clubs is already in place, with BILD describing a move to Elland Road as “possible in principle.”

However, Leeds still need to convince the player.

That could prove considerably more difficult.

Zetterer's agent Nico Pellatz recently dismissed suggestions that his client was close to joining Leeds and made his position very clear.

“Michael and his family are very happy in Frankfurt,” Pellatz said.

“A move is currently out of the question for him.”

Those comments explain why the transfer has failed to progress despite Leeds reaching an agreement with Frankfurt.

Zetterer seemingly has no intention of being forced out simply because his club wants to make changes.

Frankfurt's position is complicated by their interest in bringing in Noah Atubolu as their new number one.

To make that happen, they first need to create space in their goalkeeping department.

Zetterer appears the easier player to move, which explains why Frankfurt have been prepared to negotiate with Leeds.

But without the goalkeeper's approval, their agreement means little.

The situation also creates another question at Elland Road.

Farke recently confirmed that Lucas Perri remains Leeds' number two behind Trafford, despite persistent speculation surrounding the Brazilian's future.

Perri had been expected to leave after Trafford's arrival, but he was on the bench for Leeds' Premier League opener against Nottingham Forest.

If Leeds eventually convince Zetterer to join, it would seemingly increase the possibility of Perri departing before the transfer deadline.

The clubs appear to have done their part, meaning the decision now rests largely with Zetterer.

Frankfurt want the goalkeeper to leave and Leeds are ready to bring him to Elland Road, but the 31-year-old has so far shown little appetite for the transfer.

Unless his stance changes during the final days of the window, Leeds may have an agreement that they simply cannot complete.
