Michael Carrick sends clear Marcus Rashford message after Manchester United return

Michael Carrick says Marcus Rashford has returned to Manchester United in "great spirits", insisting the forward remains an important part of the squad despite ongoing uncertainty surrounding his future.

Rashford recently rejoined United following an extended break after the World Cup, having spent last season on loan at Barcelona.

Although the Spanish giants opted against making the move permanent, Carrick made it clear the England international is fully focused on life back at Old Trafford.

Speaking after Manchester United's pre-season victory over Leeds United, Carrick praised Rashford's attitude since returning to training.

"He's our player, and he's come back great. He's just like any other player."

The United head coach also revealed the 28-year-old has settled straight back into the squad.

"I've known Marcus a long time and he gives us something a little bit different. He's been in great spirits since he's been back."

Carrick added that Rashford's return has felt completely normal after only a few days back with the first team.

Rashford was not involved against Leeds after only recently returning from his post-World Cup break.

However, the forward is expected to be in contention for Saturday's pre-season clash with AC Milan, which could mark his first Manchester United appearance since December 2024.

The academy graduate spent last season with Barcelona after falling out of favour under former manager Ruben Amorim, but the La Liga club chose not to activate their £26 million purchase option.

Despite Carrick's positive comments, Rashford's long-term future has not yet been resolved.

Manchester United had hoped Barcelona would complete a permanent deal this summer before the Spanish club instead signed Anthony Gordon.

Rashford still has two years remaining on his current contract at Old Trafford, leaving United with an important decision to make before future transfer windows.

For now, Carrick insists the focus is solely on preparing the forward for the new season.

Rashford will continue building his fitness ahead of Manchester United's final pre-season fixture against AC Milan. His performances during the opening weeks of the season could play a major role in determining whether he remains at Old Trafford beyond this summer.
