Michael Carrick is understood to be open to bringing Marcus Rashford back to Manchester United — but only if circumstances align at both club and player level.

According to The Telegraph, the interim United head coach would consider reintegrating Rashford at Old Trafford should he secure the role on a permanent basis, despite the forward currently enjoying a productive loan spell at Barcelona.

Carrick open to Rashford return if situation changes

Rashford was deemed surplus to requirements by former United manager Ruben Amorim and allowed to join Barcelona on a season-long loan. That stance, however, is not necessarily shared by Carrick, who has worked closely with the England international both as a coach and former team-mate.

The report suggests Carrick views Rashford as a player who could still contribute meaningfully at United — but also acknowledges that a reunion would be difficult to engineer.

Rashford thriving — and smiling — in Barcelona

On the pitch, Rashford has rediscovered form and confidence in Spain. The 28-year-old has registered nine goals and nine assists in 31 appearances across all competitions, including five goals in the Champions League.

More tellingly, sources close to the player say he has “got his smile back” since leaving Manchester, benefitting from a reduced level of scrutiny compared to his time at Manchester United.

One source told The Telegraph:
“At Barcelona, when things go wrong, the inquest is not always about Marcus. That was never the case at United.”

Player preference remains Barcelona

Rashford himself has been clear about where he sees his immediate future. Speaking in December, he admitted his preference is to remain at Camp Nou beyond this season.

“What I want is to stay at Barca. It’s the ultimate goal,” Rashford said. “I’m in the perfect place and environment to continue my journey as a footballer.”

Barcelona hold an option to make the move permanent for around £26m, though financial constraints remain a potential stumbling block.

Flick impressed but rotation continues

Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has publicly praised Rashford’s qualities, citing his speed, finishing and control. However, the forward is not an automatic starter, with Raphinha and Lamine Yamal often preferred in the front line.

That reduced status appears to suit Rashford, who has embraced a lower-profile role while remaining effective.

“He has even gone unnoticed a little — if you can go unnoticed at Barcelona,” another source said.

United reunion unlikely — for now

Despite Carrick’s openness, the prevailing view is that Rashford returning to United remains unlikely. His substantial wages, long-term contract until 2028, and Barcelona’s interest in keeping him all complicate matters.

There is also the legacy of Amorim’s stance, which included publicly questioning Rashford’s commitment — a relationship that appears difficult to reset quickly.

What’s Next

Much depends on two unresolved questions: whether Carrick secures the United job permanently, and whether Barcelona can afford to trigger Rashford’s purchase option this summer. If either changes, the conversation may reopen — but for now, Rashford’s future appears firmly tied to Spain.

Should Manchester United fight to bring Marcus Rashford home — or accept that his future now lies elsewhere?
