Michael Carrick will remain Manchester United head coach for Saturday's Premier League trip to Chelsea despite growing speculation over his future following the 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth.

The 45-year-old has come under increasing pressure after United extended their winless run to eight matches, leaving them 16th in the Premier League and just one point above the relegation zone.

According to Sky Sports, senior officials considered Carrick's position following Sunday's defeat but have decided to give him another opportunity to improve results.

Manchester United decide to retain Carrick

United chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox were at Carrington on Monday discussing Carrick's future.

Sky Sports reports that the club had already begun considering alternative managerial options, with Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann among the potential candidates.

However, Carrick took training on Tuesday and will remain in charge for the trip to Stamford Bridge.

Speaking after the Bournemouth defeat, the former United midfielder indicated that he intended to continue working as normal rather than speculate about his position.

Carrick also acknowledged his responsibility for the team's performances and the disappointment surrounding their recent results.

United's poor form increases pressure

Manchester United have won just twice in 12 matches across all competitions this season, with their latest defeat extending their winless sequence to eight games.

Bournemouth secured a 3-0 victory at Old Trafford through goals from Rayan, Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson.

Carrick's decision to leave captain Bruno Fernandes on the bench attracted particular attention following the midfielder's public criticism of United's tactics after their Champions League defeat to Como.

Fernandes subsequently held talks with Carrick to resolve the situation and is expected to be available for Saturday's match.

United's difficult start has left them 16th in the Premier League, with only one league victory from their opening eight fixtures.

Chelsea clash presents another test for Carrick

Saturday's opponents Chelsea are also looking to recover from recent setbacks.

Xabi Alonso's side lost 2-0 to Tottenham last weekend before being eliminated from the Carabao Cup by Liverpool on penalties.

However, Chelsea remain fifth in the Premier League, six points ahead of United.

Carrick will therefore face another demanding fixture as he attempts to restore confidence and improve his team's results.

The match will also provide United's hierarchy with another opportunity to assess the team's response following their decision to retain him.
