Mauro Icardi retirement claim could end Everton free-agent pursuit

Everton could be forced to look elsewhere for attacking reinforcements after a dramatic report claimed free agent Mauro Icardi is considering retiring from football.

The 33-year-old had emerged as one of Everton's few immediate options after the summer transfer window closed.

Icardi remains available as a free agent, meaning the Toffees could still sign him, and recent reports suggested his representatives had formally offered him to the Premier League club.

However, the situation may now have changed completely.

According to Turkish outlet Aykırı, Icardi has stopped training individually and currently has no desire to sign for another club.

The report claims the Argentine rejected an offer worth around €5m (£4.3m) per year from Galatasaray before failing to agree terms elsewhere.

Lazio were also presented as a possible destination, with Icardi reportedly considering a return to Serie A before deciding against that option.

Most significantly, Aykırı claim an announcement regarding his retirement could arrive in the coming days.

That remains a major claim which needs to be treated cautiously.

Icardi himself has not announced his retirement, while recent information from Argentina suggested he was still exploring opportunities to continue his career.

The timing is notable because Everton's interest appeared to be developing.

Icardi's camp had reportedly made a formal proposal to the Toffees, with the possibility of a move becoming more concrete following the closure of the transfer window.

David Moyes could use another centre-forward after Everton entered the season with limited attacking depth.

Signing an experienced goalscorer without paying a transfer fee therefore had obvious appeal.

If Icardi has genuinely decided he no longer wants to continue playing, however, Everton's decision will effectively be made for them.

From Football Place's perspective, Everton should not rush this one even if the retirement reports prove premature.

Icardi's goalscoring record and experience make him an interesting short-term option, particularly when the normal transfer market is closed.

But Everton would need a player who is physically prepared and fully motivated to immediately contribute in the Premier League.

If there are genuine doubts about whether Icardi even wants to continue his career, that becomes a much bigger concern than wages or contractual terms.

For Moyes, the priority has to be finding a striker capable of helping immediately rather than simply signing the biggest name available.

Everton will need clarity over Icardi's intentions before taking their interest any further.

If the retirement report is accurate, Moyes will have to remove one of the more experienced names from his limited list of post-window striker options and explore the remaining free-agent market instead.
