Sunderland have revived their interest in AS Roma attacker Matias Soule, making fresh contact as the Italian club consider selling the 23-year-old before the transfer deadline.

The Black Cats were previously offered the chance to sign Soule by his agent but did not push ahead with a move. Their interest has now resurfaced, with AC Milan also looking at the Argentina international.

Roma are reportedly demanding between €35m and €40m.

Sunderland make fresh Soule approach

According to Il Messaggero, Sunderland have made new exploratory contact over a potential deal for Soule.

Sporting director Florent Ghisolfi could play an important role in any negotiations. He was involved in bringing the attacker to Roma from Juventus in 2024 and therefore knows the player well.

Soule's spell in the Italian capital has not developed as hoped. Injuries disrupted his progress during the 2025/26 campaign, while he is not expected to have a key role under Gian Piero Gasperini this season.

His representatives have consequently been exploring potential destinations where he could secure more regular football.

That situation has now brought Sunderland back into the picture.

AC Milan also interested in Soule

Sunderland are not alone in considering a move.

AC Milan are also interested, although the possibility of a swap involving Christopher Nkunku is described as unlikely. Nkunku is moving closer to joining RB Leipzig, meaning Milan would need to negotiate a separate deal for Soule.

Roma's willingness to sell could work in Sunderland's favour.

The Serie A club value Soule at around €35m-€40m and raising that money would help finance their own late move for Lyon winger Malick Fofana.

Gasperini is looking for attacking additions, making Soule one of the players Roma could sacrifice to create room for further business.

Soule could offer Sunderland versatility

For Sunderland, Soule represents an ambitious option during the final stages of the window.

The former Juventus youngster can operate in several attacking positions and already has significant experience in Serie A and European football despite being only 23.

There is no indication yet that Sunderland have submitted a formal bid, with their latest approach still described as exploratory.
