West Ham set to make opening offer for Southampton’s Mateus Fernandes, valued at £30m.

West Ham United are preparing an opening bid for Mateus Fernandes as Graham Potter looks to strengthen his midfield before the transfer window closes on 1 September.

According to The Guardian, Fernandes has emerged as the Hammers’ top priority, with the 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder attracting strong interest following Southampton’s relegation to the Championship.

Fernandes joined the Saints from Sporting CP last summer in a £15m deal and impressed despite the team’s struggles, making 44 appearances in all competitions. His performances have convinced Potter that he could slot straight into West Ham’s Premier League midfield.

The player featured off the bench in Southampton’s 2-1 win over Wrexham on Saturday — potentially his last game for the club if West Ham’s interest turns into an accepted offer.

Saints Face Battle to Keep Key Midfielder

With Fernandes under contract until 2029, Southampton have leverage in negotiations. A £30m sale would represent a doubling of his value in just 12 months, but with the season underway, the club may push for a higher fee.

Southampton manager Will Still is unlikely to want to lose one of his best players at this stage, but the lure of Premier League football and working under Potter could sway the midfielder.

Mateus Fernandes on His Game

In a recent interview, Fernandes discussed his mindset after Southampton’s relegation.

“I always try to give my best for the team, no matter the circumstances. That’s my focus every time I step on the pitch.” — BBC Sport

Analyst Verdict

Fernandes fits the profile of midfielder Potter favours — press-resistant, able to dictate tempo, and strong in defensive duels. While £30m is a big outlay for a player with just one Premier League season, his age and contract length make him a potentially valuable long-term signing.

With West Ham also tracking Jacob Ramsey and Ngal’ayel Mukau, Fernandes’ future could depend on how quickly talks progress.

Key Insights

  • West Ham preparing £30m opening bid for Fernandes.
  • Southampton under no pressure to sell, contract until 2029.
  • Player impressed in debut season despite relegation.
  • RB Leipzig also showing interest in other West Ham targets.

What’s Next

West Ham are expected to submit their opening offer this week. If accepted, Fernandes could be unveiled before the end of August — in time to feature in early-season Premier League fixtures.

Should West Ham meet Southampton’s £30m valuation — or hold out for a cheaper deal later in the window?

Crazy to think to pay 30M+ for a championship player. They’ve asked 50m (I think) for Dibling. Imagine what they would ask for Fernandes who’s their best player 😬
