Marcus Rashford has publicly thanked Jamie Carragher for defending him during a discussion with Gary Neville, admitting he wants the constant attention surrounding his Manchester United future to stop so he can concentrate on football.

Rashford is back at Old Trafford following his loan spell with Barcelona, who decided against activating their £26m purchase option.

After months of uncertainty surrounding his future, the 28-year-old now appears increasingly likely to remain at United for the 2026/27 campaign under Michael Carrick.

Rashford responds after Neville and Carragher debate

Rashford's situation became a topic during a preview clip from an upcoming episode of The Overlap.

Neville attempted to bring up the forward's return to Manchester United, but Carragher immediately questioned why Rashford needed to be discussed again.

The former Liverpool defender argued that Rashford is simply a good Manchester United player and expressed frustration at the constant debate surrounding him.

Rashford clearly appreciated the intervention.

Responding on X, he wrote: "Thanks, Jamie. It would be great to be able to get my head down and play football without my name being mentioned every day."

It represents a clear message from the England international as he attempts to rebuild his United career.

Barcelona decision gives Rashford another United chance

Rashford had hoped his Barcelona loan could develop into a permanent move, but the Catalan club decided against triggering the £26m option included in the agreement.

Barcelona instead moved for Newcastle United attacker Anthony Gordon.

Rashford's reported £325,000-a-week salary has also complicated the possibility of finding another destination this summer, and with fewer than two weeks remaining in the transfer window, staying at Old Trafford is becoming the increasingly realistic outcome.

That would have appeared unlikely during his difficult period under former manager Ruben Amorim.

The situation has changed considerably under Carrick.

Michael Carrick welcomes Rashford back

Carrick has spoken positively about Rashford since welcoming him back into first-team training following his post-World Cup break.

The United manager believes difficult periods are inevitable during a long career and does not appear interested in judging Rashford solely on what happened previously.

Carrick described him as a "very good player" who still has plenty to offer Manchester United.

He has also been impressed by Rashford's attitude since returning to Carrington, revealing that the attacker has trained well and integrated positively back into the group.

That backing could prove crucial.

Rashford last played competitively for United in December 2024 before loan spells with Aston Villa and Barcelona took him away from Old Trafford. Now he has an opportunity to effectively begin again under a manager who already knows him well.

Rashford can let his football do the talking

The immediate challenge is turning Carrick's confidence into performances.

United begin their Premier League campaign against newly promoted Hull City this weekend, and Rashford could have an opportunity to start changing the narrative surrounding him on the pitch.

His contractual situation also gives both parties time. Rashford still has two years remaining on his Manchester United deal, meaning there is no immediate necessity for a permanent separation.

After spending much of the last two years surrounded by speculation about his future, Rashford's latest message suggests his preference is now simple: less discussion and more football.

Key Points

What's Next?

With the transfer window approaching its conclusion, Rashford increasingly looks set to receive another opportunity at Manchester United.

The best way to achieve that will be through performances, starting with United's opening fixtures of the new Premier League season.
