Marco Rose will keep Bournemouth’s attacking identity, says club legend

Marco Rose will not move Bournemouth away from the fast, aggressive and attacking football that has driven the club’s recent success.

That is the view of Cherries legend and club ambassador Steve Fletcher, who believes Rose was appointed because his philosophy fits the squad built under Andoni Iraola.

The new Bournemouth manager has replaced Iraola following his move to Liverpool and will now lead the club into its first European campaign.

Fletcher believes Bournemouth’s hierarchy deliberately targeted a manager who could build on the club’s existing identity rather than completely change it.

“When people at the top end of the club, like Tiago Pinto, were looking for a manager to replace Andoni, they were looking for someone who buys into our way of playing,” Fletcher told the Echo.

“You can’t just have a squad of players that you’ve built over many years, only to have a manager come in and play a totally different style of football.”

Rose is expected to make tactical adjustments, but Fletcher insists the fundamental approach will remain.

“Marco Rose plays in a style that will suit all the players,” he added. “He’ll be a little bit different to Andoni and tweak things here and there, but all managers are different.”

Fletcher has also been impressed by Rose’s attitude since his arrival.

The German coach met Iraola and wanted to speak with Fletcher about Bournemouth’s history and the local area.

Fletcher believes that willingness to understand the club could help Rose quickly build a relationship with supporters.

“If his humanity is anything to go by, then he’ll be a great success at the Cherries,” he said.

Recruitment will also be crucial as Bournemouth look to maintain their attacking identity.

Fletcher pointed to the importance of replacing departing players with similar profiles, highlighting the need for pace, aggression and directness in wide areas.

“We need the right players to keep what we have going, which is the fast, aggressive football that we play,” he said.

Rose takes charge at one of the most exciting moments in Bournemouth’s history.

After finishing in the Premier League’s top six, the Cherries are preparing to play European football for the first time.

Fletcher urged supporters to appreciate a period that once seemed impossible.

“Fans need to soak it up, drink it in and live it,” he said.

“Don’t take this for granted. This is not normal for AFC Bournemouth.”

Rose will now begin shaping the squad for a historic campaign at home and in Europe.

The biggest challenge will be putting his own tactical ideas into place without losing the identity that made Bournemouth successful under Iraola. Fletcher is confident the club have chosen a manager capable of doing exactly that.
