Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has branded reports of Marc Guehi ‘ignoring him’ as “nonsense,” after footage emerged of the Eagles captain walking off the pitch at Stamford Bridge despite the coach calling his name.

Sky Sports cameras caught the moment after Palace’s 0-0 draw with Chelsea, with Glasner later appearing to discuss it with Jean-Philippe Mateta. The clip quickly spread online, raising questions about Guehi’s commitment amid strong links to Liverpool.

But Glasner told reporters he had no concerns. “Marc was upset that he didn’t win the game and I loved this,” he explained. “It’s the best sign that he could show of how ambitious we are.”

Why Glasner Defended Guehi

Guehi’s contract runs until summer 2026 but speculation over his future has intensified with Liverpool considering a move before the window shuts. Despite the uncertainty, Glasner stressed that his captain’s frustration should be seen as positive.

Palace were denied a famous victory at Stamford Bridge after Eberechi Eze’s superb first-half free-kick was ruled out by VAR. Glasner said Guehi’s emotions were tied to that moment, adding: “He was disappointed the goal was disallowed, that we did not win. It was written in a negative way, I see it as the opposite.”

Oliver Glasner on Guehi’s Reaction

“I’ve seen so much nonsense written about this. Marc was upset that he didn’t win the game and I loved this. It’s the best sign of how ambitious we are.” — Oliver Glasner

The Austrian coach highlighted how Guehi’s determination reflects Palace’s development: “This shows the growth of Crystal Palace in recent years, that we are not happy with just a draw at Chelsea.”

Guehi featured in 37 games for Palace last season, registering two goals and one assist. His 88% passing accuracy reflects his composure in possession, while his defensive stability made him one of the most consistent centre-backs outside the Premier League’s top six.

Analyst Verdict

From a tactical perspective, Guehi remains central to Palace’s defensive structure. Reviewing his last three matches, his aerial timing and ability to play out under pressure stood out — qualities that make him attractive to Liverpool and other elite clubs.

Glasner’s public backing is a clear signal to both supporters and suitors: Guehi’s professionalism is not in doubt. But with one year left on his deal, Palace may yet face a tough decision if Liverpool test their resolve before the deadline.

Key Insights

  • Glasner dismissed claims Guehi ignored him at Chelsea.
  • Palace boss says defender was “upset” not to win — not disinterested.
  • Liverpool monitoring Guehi, whose contract expires in 2026.
  • Eberechi Eze’s VAR-disallowed free-kick added to frustrations.

What’s Next

Crystal Palace expect Guehi to remain fully committed while speculation continues. With Liverpool circling, Palace must weigh up whether to cash in now or risk losing him at a reduced fee next summer.

The Eagles are also bracing for late-window interest in Eze, making squad stability a pressing issue for Glasner as the Premier League season gathers pace.

Should Palace hold firm on Marc Guehi — or sell now before his contract ticks down?
