Chelsea identify Manu Kone as Enzo Fernandez replacement after Arsenal agreement

Chelsea have been handed fresh encouragement in their pursuit of AS Roma midfielder Manu Kone, with the Frenchman reportedly prioritising a move to the Premier League as uncertainty continues to surround Enzo Fernandez's future.

According to Il Messaggero, Roma remain open to selling the 24-year-old before the end of June as they look to meet UEFA Financial Fair Play requirements. Arsenal have already held talks with the midfielder and agreed personal terms earlier in the transfer window, although the Gunners have yet to submit an official bid.

Chelsea are now firmly in the picture and could step up their interest if Fernandez departs Stamford Bridge this summer.

Real Madrid continue to be linked with Fernandez, and any serious offer for the Argentine would significantly alter Chelsea's transfer plans.

Should the Blues receive a satisfactory bid, Kone has emerged as one of the club's preferred midfield targets. The report adds that the former Borussia Mönchengladbach player would welcome the opportunity to move to England.

Atletico Madrid also attempted to sign Kone and submitted an offer worth around €45 million, close to Roma's valuation. However, the France international rejected the approach as he continues to hold out for a Premier League switch.

That leaves Chelsea and Arsenal as the two clubs best placed to secure his signature.

Arsenal moved first in the race earlier this summer by opening discussions with Kone's representatives and reaching an agreement over personal terms.

Despite that progress, Mikel Arteta's side have not followed up with an official offer to Roma, allowing Chelsea to enter the race at a crucial stage.

With Roma eager to balance their finances before the end of June, the coming days could prove decisive if either Premier League club decides to formalise their interest.

Kone's profile shares several similarities with Fernandez's. Both midfielders are comfortable progressing the ball through central areas, carrying possession under pressure and driving play from deep positions.

The Frenchman enjoyed one of the strongest periods of his career under Gian Piero Gasperini, whose demanding tactical system highlighted his athleticism, pressing ability and ball progression.

Kone also fits the club's preference for signing players entering their prime years with significant room for further development.

However, much will depend on Fernandez's future. Chelsea are unlikely to pursue a deal unless there is movement on the Argentine, while Roma's financial situation could create an opportunity for a swift agreement before their accounting deadline.

Roma are expected to continue pushing for player sales before the end of June to satisfy UEFA financial regulations. Chelsea will monitor developments surrounding Fernandez, while Arsenal must decide whether to turn their long-standing interest into a formal offer.

If neither Premier League club acts quickly, Roma could reopen discussions with Atletico Madrid or other interested sides, although Kone's preference currently appears to be a move to England.
