Manchester United are finally tackling the glaring issue that has haunted them for two seasons — their misfiring forward line. After a disastrous 2024/25 Premier League campaign that saw them finish 15th with just 44 goals scored and a -10 goal difference, new boss Ruben Amorim is wasting no time correcting a mistake the club should have addressed last summer.

Last year, United's recruitment baffled many. Despite scoring just 57 league goals in 2023/24 and finishing 8th, most of their transfer activity revolved around defenders and defensive midfielders. Joshua Zirkzee arrived as the sole attacking reinforcement — a gamble that never paid off. He and Rasmus Hojlund managed only seven league goals combined last season, underlining the scale of the attacking crisis.

Now, with Amorim in charge and recruitment plans finally pointing in the right direction, United are trying to ensure history doesn’t repeat itself.

The Stats Tell the Story of a Broken Attack

Manchester United transfer strategy 2025 is finally prioritising goals — after a league-low attacking return for a top-six side.

Only six United players scored more than two league goals in 2023/24, and the situation worsened last season. Scott McTominay was sold, Marcus Rashford loaned out, and Kobbie Mainoo rarely started. The squad lacked any reliable goalscoring outlet, and it showed.

Worse still, United registered their lowest league finish in modern Premier League history — only narrowly avoiding a relegation battle. Fans were rightly furious that attacking reinforcements weren’t secured earlier.

Amorim Wastes No Time: Cunha Signed, Mbeumo Targeted

Ruben Amorim’s first major move as manager was to approve the £63m signing of Wolves’ Matheus Cunha — a versatile attacker who scored 15 Premier League goals last term. His arrival already makes the squad more dangerous going forward.

Now United are reportedly pushing hard to sign Bryan Mbeumo, who was the fourth-highest scorer in the league last season. If they land him, it would signal a long-overdue shift toward creating a cutting-edge attack worthy of their ambitions.

Striker Search: Osimhen or Gyokeres to Lead the Line?

The club aren’t done yet. United remain active in the striker market, with both Viktor Gyokeres and Victor Osimhen emerging as serious options. Either would bring guaranteed goals — something Hojlund and Zirkzee have failed to provide.

Amorim wants a central forward who can lead the line consistently. Given the number of chances United created that went to waste last season, a prolific finisher could instantly transform their fortunes.

Man United 2024/25 Attacking Stats

Stat Value
Premier League Goals Scored 44
Top Scorer Bruno Fernandes (9)
Hojlund + Zirkzee Combined 7 goals
Goal Difference -10
League Finish 15th
  • Manchester United transfer strategy 2025 shifts focus to attack
  • Cunha signed after Wolves’ 15-goal season
  • Mbeumo targeted to add final-third threat
  • Osimhen or Gyokeres lined up as potential No.9s
  • Last season's goal tally worst in over a decade

What’s Next?

More attacking signings are likely before the window closes. Amorim knows the pressure will be immediate — and failure to deliver goals this time won’t be tolerated. Pre-season should offer the first look at how the new frontline shapes up.

Can United’s new frontline fire them back to the top?
