Manchester United sign Karl Darlow on free transfer from Leeds United

Manchester United have confirmed the signing of experienced goalkeeper Karl Darlow on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract at Leeds United.

The 35-year-old becomes the club's second arrival of the summer after Andrey Santos and will provide experienced cover between the posts as Michael Carrick continues to reshape his squad ahead of the new Premier League season.

Darlow has signed a contract until 2028, with the option of a further year.

The arrival of Darlow addresses an important need in United's goalkeeping department.

The veteran is expected to provide competition and cover for first-choice goalkeeper Senne Lammens following André Onana's decision to remain at Trabzonspor. His signing also paves the way for Altay Bayındır to return to Turkey, while highly rated youngster Radek Vítek is expected to leave on loan to gain regular first-team experience.

Although Darlow is unlikely to arrive as an automatic starter, his Premier League experience and leadership are viewed as valuable additions to Carrick's squad.

While Darlow may not attract the headlines of a marquee signing, his arrival gives Manchester United reliable depth in a demanding position.

Just as importantly, the former Newcastle United goalkeeper satisfies the Premier League's homegrown player requirements, offering valuable squad flexibility throughout a season that could include domestic and European commitments.

For Carrick, adding experienced professionals alongside younger talent has been a recurring theme of United's recruitment strategy this summer, and Darlow fits that profile perfectly.
