Fábio Carvalho has opened up on the advice Marco Silva gave him before his move to Liverpool, revealing the former Fulham manager encouraged him to join the Reds while also offering a warning that has stayed with him ever since.

Carvalho completed his move to Anfield in the summer of 2022 after a standout campaign with Fulham, but his time on Merseyside never developed as many had expected. Looking back, the winger believes Silva's honesty helped prepare him for the challenges that followed.

Silva encouraged Liverpool move

Speaking to A Bola, Carvalho reflected on the conversation he shared with Silva before leaving Craven Cottage.

Rather than trying to persuade him to stay, the Portuguese coach supported the transfer and encouraged the youngster to embrace the opportunity.

"When I was about to leave for Liverpool, he came to speak to me and I've never forgotten his words.

"He told me Liverpool was a great opportunity, but warned me that sometimes the grass isn't as green as it seems.

"That really stayed with me. His honesty and the fact he continued to care about me, showing it wasn't only about what happened on the pitch. That's something I value a lot."

Carvalho had enjoyed a remarkable breakthrough under Silva, scoring 11 goals and providing eight assists as Fulham won promotion to the Premier League during the 2021/22 Championship season.

Those performances convinced Liverpool to complete a deal worth around €9 million, with additional performance-related bonuses.

Liverpool spell failed to deliver

Despite arriving with high expectations, Carvalho struggled to establish himself in Liverpool's first team.

He made 21 appearances for the Reds before loan spells at RB Leipzig and Hull City, eventually securing a permanent move to Brentford in search of regular football.

In hindsight, Silva's advice appears particularly fitting. Although the move to Liverpool represented a huge opportunity, breaking into an established squad proved far more difficult than many anticipated.

More than just a manager

Carvalho also explained why Silva's opinion carried so much weight.

The winger described the Benfica manager as a coach who consistently invests in young players, not only by giving them opportunities but by supporting them away from the pitch as well.

According to Carvalho, Silva regularly promotes academy players to first-team training and creates an environment where young footballers feel trusted. He even referred to the experienced coach as a father figure, someone capable of balancing high standards with genuine care for his players' personal development.

That combination, Carvalho believes, is what made Silva's advice before joining Liverpool so memorable.
