Gordon Strachan warns Manchester United are ‘six years behind Arsenal’ in Premier League title race

Former Manchester United and Leeds midfielder Gordon Strachan believes Manchester United remain years away from matching Arsenal and has identified Michael Carrick’s defence as the biggest obstacle to a genuine Premier League title challenge.

Speaking to Midnite as part of its ‘Built Different Index’, Strachan admitted United remain capable of winning knockout competitions but does not believe they are ready to compete for the league.

Asked whether Manchester United could win the Premier League, Strachan delivered a clear verdict.

“Can they win the title? I don’t think so,” he said. “I think other teams, like Arsenal, are six years ahead.”

Strachan also pointed towards Manchester City’s established structure and significant spending as another indication of the level United are attempting to reach.

However, he believes expectations at Old Trafford will inevitably remain high because of United’s resources, infrastructure and enormous supporter base.

“Would you expect Man United in the next couple of years to be challenging for the league? Of course you would,” Strachan added.

That expectation also contributes to the continued frustration surrounding the club and INEOS, although Strachan believes social media has amplified supporter criticism compared to previous generations.

For Strachan, United’s immediate problem is not necessarily their attacking quality or midfield options. It is how Carrick’s team defend.

United conceded four goals across their opening two matches against newly promoted Hull City and Ipswich Town, something Strachan considers a major warning sign.

“There’s something wrong there with the way you defend,” he said.

Strachan stressed that responsibility extends beyond the defenders themselves. Defensive organisation involves individuals, the back four as a unit and the entire team.

The comparison with Arsenal is particularly concerning for United. Arsenal began their campaign without conceding across their opening two matches, including a difficult away fixture against Aston Villa.

United have strengthened their midfield, but Strachan believes further star signings alone will not solve the problem.

“You still need to be able to defend,” he said.

Strachan believes the Champions League could provide Carrick with an opportunity to learn more about his squad.

Strong early results in Europe could allow the United manager to rotate his team, rest established players and provide opportunities to younger or fringe members of the squad.

That experimentation, Strachan believes, can sometimes uncover unexpected solutions.

Ultimately, though, his assessment comes back to one fundamental requirement.

“The only thing that matters in football is results.”

If United want to close the considerable gap Strachan believes exists between themselves and Arsenal, improving defensively appears to be the first requirement.

Carrick’s immediate task is to establish greater defensive stability. United have added more midfield options, but Strachan believes their title ambitions will remain unrealistic until the team becomes significantly harder to score against.

The Champions League could also become an important testing ground. If United secure strong results early, Carrick may have greater freedom to rotate his squad and determine which players deserve larger roles as the season develops.
