Willian backs Estevao and João Pedro to become key players for Chelsea

Former Chelsea winger Willian has backed Brazilian duo Estevao and João Pedro to play major roles at Stamford Bridge under Xabi Alonso.

Willian spent seven years at Chelsea and knows the demands that come with playing for the club. Speaking to ESPN Brazil, the 38-year-old was particularly enthusiastic about Estevao's potential despite the youngster's difficult start to the new season.

Estevao's first season at Chelsea was disrupted by a thigh injury that also ruled him out of the World Cup with Brazil.

His situation has become more complicated since Alonso's arrival. The 19-year-old has received limited opportunities during the opening weeks of the season and has concerns about where he fits into the new manager's plans.

Willian, however, believes his compatriot possesses the quality to eventually become one of Chelsea's most important players.

“Estevao is a different player, he has a lot of quality and he is also a player who can take centre stage,” Willian said.

“He is a player who catches the eye, without a doubt. He has an important role in the Chelsea team and he certainly has everything to become the protagonist.”

Those comments provide a significant vote of confidence at a time when Estevao is fighting to establish himself under Alonso.

Willian is equally confident about João Pedro, who has been handed Chelsea's number nine shirt this season.

Unlike Estevao, the striker already appears to have secured an important position in Alonso's plans and scored inside the opening minute of Chelsea's Premier League victory over Fulham.

Willian believes João Pedro is capable of handling the additional responsibility that comes with leading Chelsea's attack.

“João Pedro has enough quality and potential to take on that responsibility,” he said.

“He is a player who has been playing very well since last season and can improve even more. So, without a doubt, Chelsea are in good hands in that position.”

For João Pedro, the challenge is maintaining his position as Chelsea's leading striker. Estevao has a different task: convincing Alonso that his considerable talent deserves a bigger role.

Willian believes both Brazilians have everything required to succeed.

Estevao will be looking for more opportunities as he attempts to establish himself in Alonso's system, with his playing time likely to remain an important storyline heading towards January.

João Pedro, meanwhile, has the opportunity to cement himself as Chelsea's first-choice striker and justify Willian's confidence in his ability to carry the responsibility of the number nine shirt.
