Manchester United are reportedly considering Eddie Howe as a replacement for Michael Carrick, with the former Newcastle United manager emerging as the preferred candidate of director of football Jason Wilcox.
Carrick remains in charge following Sunday's 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth, which extended United's winless run to eight matches across all competitions.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Howe leads the list of potential replacements, with Julian Nagelsmann and Antonio Conte also under consideration.
Manchester United explore Carrick replacements
United have reportedly held discussions with representatives of potential managerial candidates as uncertainty grows over Carrick's future.
The former midfielder has overseen just two victories in 12 matches this season, leaving United 16th in the Premier League.
The Guardian reports that Wilcox has made contact with Howe, whose Premier League experience is considered an advantage.
Howe left Newcastle in July after nearly five years in charge, having guided the club to Carabao Cup success in 2025 and Champions League qualification twice.
Nagelsmann is also a leading contender, with United's director of recruitment, Christopher Vivell, understood to favour the former Germany manager.
Carrick has remained in his position following discussions among United's senior officials, although no decision on his long-term future has been announced.
Eddie Howe appointment could cost United £3m
Manchester United could face a compensation payment to Newcastle if they decide to appoint Howe.
According to talkSPORT, the club may need to pay approximately £3million because of contractual arrangements agreed when Howe left St James' Park.
The Guardian has also reported that Newcastle would be entitled to compensation, despite Howe stepping down during the summer.
However, Sky Sports News has suggested Howe could be appointed without a compensation payment, leaving the precise financial position unclear.
Howe is reportedly open to discussing the United job, but there is no confirmation that an agreement has been reached.
Ratcliffe expected at Chelsea showdown
United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is reportedly expected to attend Saturday's Premier League meeting with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Carrick will remain in charge for the fixture despite the growing uncertainty surrounding his position.
United's defeat to Bournemouth followed another disappointing result against Como, increasing pressure on the head coach after a difficult start to the campaign.
The club's hierarchy are considering their options, with Howe and Nagelsmann among the leading candidates should a managerial change be made.
