Manchester City have confirmed the next step in Sverre Nypan’s development by sending the teenage midfielder on loan to Belgian side Lommel SK.
The 19-year-old joined City from Norwegian giants Rosenborg in a deal worth more than €15 million after attracting interest from several of Europe’s biggest clubs.
Now, after a difficult spell in the Championship, Nypan will continue his development in Belgium.
Man City choose Lommel for Nypan's next step
Nypan was regarded as one of Scandinavia’s brightest talents before moving to Manchester City.
He became the youngest player ever to debut in Norway’s top flight at just 15 years old and quickly attracted interest from Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain.
City ultimately won the race for his signature and immediately integrated him into Pep Guardiola’s first-team environment.
Last season, Nypan trained regularly with the senior squad before joining Middlesbrough on loan in the Championship.
Championship spell cut short
The Norwegian made 20 appearances for Middlesbrough but started only three matches.
Manchester City decided to recall him in February, ending his loan spell earlier than planned.
Rather than keeping him at the Etihad this season, City have opted for another development loan, this time within the City Football Group network.
Lommel SK, who compete in Belgium, are also owned by City Football Group, giving Manchester City greater control over Nypan’s progress.
Fresh opportunity in Belgium
The move offers Nypan the chance to play regular first-team football in a less demanding environment than the Championship.
He will also become a teammate of experienced Dutch forward Ralf Seuntjens as Lommel look to challenge in Belgium this season.
Manchester City continue to view Nypan as one of their most promising young midfielders, and regular minutes will be crucial if he is to eventually compete for a place at the Etihad.
