Chelsea could receive transfer boost as Al-Hilal open Mamadou Sarr talks

Chelsea could receive an unexpected transfer boost from Al-Hilal, with the Saudi club reportedly opening talks over a move for young defender Mamadou Sarr.

The 20-year-old faces an uncertain future at Stamford Bridge after struggling to establish himself following his return from Strasbourg, and a departure before the transfer deadline is now considered highly likely.

Real Sociedad are interested in taking Sarr on loan, but Al-Hilal's involvement could potentially provide Chelsea with the opportunity to secure a permanent transfer instead.

According to Foot Mercato, Al-Hilal are actively pursuing Sarr and have already presented their sporting project to the Senegal international.

Talks with the defender are currently underway as the Saudi club attempt to convince him to make the move.

Al-Hilal already have Sarr's international teammate Kalidou Koulibaly in their squad, which could help them make their proposal more attractive.

The precise structure being discussed has not been revealed. Real Sociedad want a loan, while it remains unclear whether Al-Hilal are proposing a temporary or permanent transfer.

A permanent deal could be considerably more attractive to Chelsea if substantial money is offered.

Chelsea originally signed Sarr from Strasbourg for around €14m before allowing him to spend the first half of last season with the French club.

He returned to Stamford Bridge in February but struggled to establish himself, making only seven appearances across all competitions and playing 302 minutes.

His position has become even more complicated following Chelsea's summer recruitment.

Xabi Alonso already had Levi Colwill, Wesley Fofana, Tosin Adarabioyo, Axel Disasi, Benoît Badiashile and Jorrel Hato among his centre-back options before the club added Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace.

Several defenders could still leave before the window closes, but Sarr's pathway to regular football nevertheless looks crowded.

Earlier in the summer, Alonso reportedly delayed a final decision over Sarr because he wanted more time to assess the youngster. The situation now appears to be moving towards an exit.

Real Sociedad provide Sarr with another potential route away from Chelsea.

The Spanish club are interested in a season-long loan, which could appeal to a 20-year-old looking for regular senior football while remaining in one of Europe's major leagues.

That could become an important factor in Sarr's decision.

While Al-Hilal may have greater financial power, the defender could prefer to remain in European football at this stage of his development.

Chelsea's preference may be different. If Al-Hilal are prepared to discuss a lucrative permanent deal, the Blues would have to weigh that opportunity against the developmental benefits of sending Sarr to Spain.

Sarr must now decide which pathway best suits his career while Chelsea assess the offers available.

Real Sociedad can provide a European loan and the opportunity for regular football, while Al-Hilal could present a very different sporting and financial proposition. If the Saudi club are prepared to make a sizeable permanent offer, Chelsea may see an opportunity to generate an unexpected transfer profit.
