Malick Yalcouyé continued his impressive start to the season by starring on his Ivory Coast debut in a 2-0 AFCON qualifying victory over Ghana.
The Brighton midfielder scored the opening goal before winning the penalty converted by Franck Kessié, playing a decisive role as Hervé Renard's side began their qualification campaign with three points.
It continues a remarkable few weeks for the 20-year-old, who has already scored against Chelsea and Coventry in the Premier League following his summer move from IFK Gothenburg.
Yalcouyé takes Brighton form onto international stage
Yalcouyé needed less than one half of football to make his mark at senior international level.
Ghana allowed the Brighton midfielder too much space outside the area shortly before half-time and were punished as he produced a powerful finish beyond Lawrence Ati Zigi.
The goal reflected the confidence Yalcouyé has shown at club level during Brighton's strong start under Fabian Hürzeler.
His influence continued after the break.
Abdul Fatawu brought Yalcouyé down inside the penalty area, allowing Ivory Coast captain Kessié to double the advantage from the spot following a lengthy protest from the Ghana players.
Ivory Coast deserved winners against Ghana
Yalcouyé provided the decisive moments, but Ivory Coast had already created enough opportunities to justify their victory.
Yan Diomande caused Ghana problems throughout, while Nicolas Pépé passed up three opportunities during the first half.
Carlos Queiroz's side improved after falling two goals behind. Caleb Yirenkyi forced Yahia Fofana into a good save before substitute Felix Afena-Gyan wasted a major late opportunity.
There was ultimately no way back, leaving Ivory Coast with a winning start in Group C as they target qualification for AFCON 2027.
For Brighton, Yalcouyé's performance represents another encouraging development. After making an impact in the Premier League, the midfielder has now shown he can immediately influence games at senior international level as well.
