Liverpool and Man Utd eye Malick Thiaw as Newcastle defender attracts transfer interest

Newcastle United defender Malick Thiaw is reportedly attracting interest from Liverpool and Manchester United after establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s most highly regarded centre-backs.

The Germany international joined Newcastle from AC Milan in the summer of 2025 for more than €40million and has since developed into an important figure at St James’ Park.

According to Caught Offside, his performances have now caught the attention of two of Newcastle’s Premier League rivals.

Liverpool are reportedly gathering information on Thiaw as they assess their long-term options at centre-back.

The Reds have been searching for defensive reinforcements following problems at the back over recent seasons, while Virgil van Dijk’s age means succession planning is becoming increasingly important.

Thiaw is among the names Liverpool are considering for either the January transfer window or next summer.

The 25-year-old has accumulated significant Premier League experience since leaving Milan, making 58 appearances for Newcastle and scoring five goals.

His combination of physicality, experience and age could make him an attractive option for Liverpool as they look towards the next generation of their defence.

Manchester United are reportedly keeping tabs on Thiaw for similar reasons.

Defensive stability remains an issue at Old Trafford, with Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez failing to provide consistent long-term availability and Matthijs de Ligt dealing with recurring fitness problems.

United also have highly rated youngsters Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven, although both are still developing the experience and leadership required to become established defensive leaders.

That has seemingly led United to consider more experienced alternatives, with Thiaw emerging on their radar.

Newcastle, however, are under little contractual pressure.

Thiaw remains tied to the Magpies until June 2029, meaning Liverpool or Manchester United would likely need to make a significant offer if they decide to turn their early interest into a serious approach.

For now, the reported interest remains at an exploratory stage, with no indication that Liverpool or Manchester United have submitted an offer.

Newcastle’s strong contractual position means there is little reason to consider a sale unless a major proposal arrives. However, Thiaw’s continued development could make his future one to watch heading towards January and next summer.
