Eddie Howe has praised Malick Thiaw for his seamless adaptation to life at Newcastle United, describing the summer signing as someone who has “settled in so well it feels like he’s been here for years.”

Speaking on The 2 Robbies Podcast with Robbie Earle and Robbie Mustoe, Howe admitted this Premier League season has been a challenge for Newcastle, but highlighted Thiaw’s performances as a major positive.

Howe delighted with Thiaw’s early impact

Newcastle’s domestic campaign has been far from smooth — the Magpies sit just two points above the relegation zone — but Thiaw’s arrival from AC Milan has provided stability and leadership at the back.

“Malick, as you say, has recently come into the team and seems like he’s been in the team for a lot longer than that,” Howe said. “He’s settled in really well. He’s built up a good relationship with the players around him. And yeah, delighted with how he started.”

Thiaw’s ability to adapt quickly stands out in contrast to some of Newcastle’s other new arrivals. While Aaron Ramsdale, Anthony Elanga, and Jacob Ramsey have endured inconsistent starts, the 23-year-old German defender has looked right at home in Howe’s demanding system.

A rare quick success under Howe

Behind the scenes, Newcastle staff have long acknowledged that most players require time to meet Howe’s tactical and physical standards. That pattern held true for Lewis Hall and Anthony Gordon, who both needed months to find consistency. Thiaw, however, has broken the trend with his immediate composure and defensive intelligence.

He has already become a regular starter and one of the few consistent performers in a difficult campaign for the Magpies.

Those numbers illustrate Thiaw’s consistency and defensive efficiency — strong in duels, composed in possession, and rarely caught out of position.

Our View: A signing that embodies Howe’s ideal profile

In our view, Thiaw’s smooth transition reflects both his football intelligence and Newcastle’s evolving recruitment strategy. The defender’s composure under pressure and aerial dominance make him a natural fit for Howe’s structured yet aggressive defensive model.

As the Magpies fight to climb the table, Thiaw’s calm influence and leadership could be vital in restoring confidence to a side still adjusting to several summer changes. For a team struggling for rhythm, he has become one of the few unquestionable bright spots.
