Luke Shaw absence highlights Man Utd transfer failure before Champions League opener

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has played down concerns over Luke Shaw after the defender missed training ahead of Thursday’s Champions League opener against Sabah.

Shaw’s absence immediately raised questions because United failed to sign another specialist senior left-back during the summer transfer window.

The club had targeted Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall, but Newcastle refused to sell the England international. That left Shaw as Carrick’s only established specialist option in the position.

Shaw played all 38 Premier League matches last season, but United now have the additional demands of Champions League football to manage.

Carrick insists Wednesday’s absence was simply about recovery rather than another injury problem.

“We just gave him an extra recovery day today,” Carrick explained.

“We'll see by tomorrow how he is, but it's not an ongoing thing or a plan or anything like that.”

United face Sabah on Thursday before quickly turning their attention towards Sunday’s Manchester derby against Manchester City.

That schedule demonstrates why United’s failure to add another left-back could become an issue.

Harry Amass is not part of the senior squad, leaving Noussair Mazraoui, Patrick Dorgu and Diogo Dalot as potential alternatives if Shaw requires a rest.

Mazraoui replaced Shaw during the 2-2 draw against Everton, but none of those options are natural specialist left-backs.

From Football Place’s perspective, this is where United’s summer transfer decision could become increasingly important.

Shaw proved his durability last season, but asking a 31-year-old defender to handle Premier League and Champions League football with limited specialist cover carries an obvious risk.

United wanted Hall precisely because another high-level left-back would have provided genuine competition rather than simply emergency cover.

Carrick has already indicated that rotation will be necessary during a demanding schedule.

“It's a balanced view, that's why we've got the squad,” he said.

“We need to adapt to certain strengths and different ways of playing.”

There was at least encouraging news elsewhere in defence, with Matthijs de Ligt back in training after undergoing back surgery in May.

Carrick stressed that United will remain patient with the Dutchman after his lengthy absence, but described his progress as positive.

His return would strengthen United’s defensive options considerably. At left-back, however, Shaw remains particularly important.

For now there appears to be no injury concern. The bigger question is whether United will eventually regret failing to provide him with specialist competition.

Shaw will be assessed before Thursday’s Champions League match, with Carrick needing to consider Sunday’s Manchester derby as well. With European football increasing United’s workload, managing Shaw could become one of Carrick’s biggest selection challenges this season.
