Fabian Hurzeler explains why Brighton signed Luka Vuskovic from Tottenham

Brighton & Hove Albion head coach Fabian Hurzeler has explained why the club moved to sign Luka Vuskovic from Tottenham, revealing the teenage defender embodies the qualities the Seagulls prioritise when recruiting new players.

The 19-year-old arrived at the Amex Stadium following an impressive loan spell at HSV Hamburg, where his performances attracted interest from several leading European clubs. However, Hurzeler insists Brighton's decision was based on far more than the Croatian's footballing ability.

Brighton have been active in the transfer market following the departures of key figures Danny Welbeck and Jan Paul van Hecke, with Vuskovic and Pascal Struijk brought in to strengthen the squad.

Speaking to Sky Germany, Hurzeler said Brighton's recruitment process focuses just as much on a player's character as their technical qualities.

"(We want) players who fit our identity very well.

"Players who want to control a game, who are very, very good with the ball at their feet, who always manage to find solutions, who have a super mentality.

"I think that's also a very, very important point, that we not only scout the player, but also the right person."

Hurzeler believes Vuskovic perfectly matches that profile, highlighting the defender's professionalism and desire to improve despite his young age.

"He is a player who always works hard.

"He is a player who wants to improve every day, who is already very, very mature despite his age and who brings this mentality to always want to get better."

The Brighton boss also revealed positive feedback from people at HSV Hamburg strengthened the club's confidence before completing the deal.

"Of course, the colleagues from HSV have spoken and that gives you naturally a good feeling."

Vuskovic is expected to compete for a regular place in Brighton's defence following Van Hecke's departure, with the Seagulls hoping another highly-rated young signing can continue the club's strong record of developing emerging talent.

Vuskovic will continue adapting to Hurzeler's tactical system as Brighton prepare for the new Premier League season. The teenager is expected to compete for regular minutes immediately, with the Seagulls hoping his development continues after an outstanding campaign on loan in Germany.
