Newcastle United remain interested in Sporting CP striker Luis Suárez after a proposed move to Fenerbahçe appears to have fallen apart, according to reports in Portugal.

The Colombian forward was heavily linked with the Turkish giants last week after businessman Hakan Safi claimed he had reached an agreement to bring the Sporting star to Istanbul. The story generated significant attention, particularly after Sporting president Frederico Varandas publicly stated that any club wishing to sign Suárez would need to meet his €80 million (£69 million) release clause.

However, Portuguese outlet Record reports that the situation has now changed dramatically following Fenerbahçe's presidential election.

Fenerbahçe Plan Falls Away

Safi's proposed project reportedly included several high-profile signings, with Suárez among the headline targets. Those plans have now been shelved after Safi lost the election, receiving 9,927 votes compared to Aziz Yildirim's 17,245.

As a result, the transfer pathway that appeared to be developing between Sporting and Fenerbahçe is no longer considered active.

That development leaves Newcastle among the clubs still monitoring the striker's situation as the summer window progresses.

Newcastle Still Tracking Sporting Striker

Record states that Newcastle already tested Sporting's resolve with an offer in May. The Portuguese champions rejected that approach and pointed directly to the player's release clause.

Despite that setback, the Magpies have not abandoned their interest.

Eddie Howe's side are expected to strengthen their attacking options ahead of the 2026/27 campaign, and Suárez remains under consideration after an outstanding season in Portugal.

The 28-year-old has scored 36 goals and registered seven assists in 51 appearances across all competitions, establishing himself as one of Sporting's most influential players.

World Cup Could Influence Next Move

Suárez is also expected to lead Colombia's attack at the 2026 World Cup, providing another opportunity to enhance his growing reputation on the international stage.

Sporting are believed to be reluctant to negotiate early in the transfer window, especially with the possibility of other key departures this summer. That stance strengthens the club's position and could make any deal increasingly difficult for interested clubs.

Varandas recently expressed confidence that the striker will remain fully committed if he stays in Lisbon. “Next year he'll score 40 goals,” the Sporting president said.

What's Next?

Newcastle's interest appears genuine, but Sporting's position remains unchanged. Unless a club is prepared to approach the €80 million release clause, negotiations may prove difficult. The World Cup could also play a significant role in determining whether Suárez's value rises further before the transfer window reaches its decisive stages.

Will Newcastle return with an improved offer, or will Sporting succeed in keeping one of their most important players for another season?
