Lucas Perri under pressure at Torino as Leeds United spell blamed for shaky start

Lucas Perri is already facing scrutiny at Torino following his summer move from Leeds United, with reports in Italy suggesting his lack of regular football under Daniel Farke has contributed to a difficult start.

The Brazilian goalkeeper eventually left Elland Road following weeks of uncertainty during the summer transfer window. Torino ultimately secured him on a free loan with a €16million option to buy, but his opening performances in Italy have raised concerns.

Perri's departure followed lengthy negotiations involving Leeds, Torino and Marseille.

Torino initially proposed a deal worth around €10m plus a loan fee, but Leeds' attempts to generate additional competition for the goalkeeper reportedly resulted in improved terms.

Marseille entered the race, although Perri had already made Torino his preferred destination.

The 28-year-old is said to have rejected the French club and waited around a month for Torino to complete the agreement.

That determination has not yet translated into a convincing start on the pitch.

According to La Stampa, Perri has already committed costly mistakes since arriving in Turin.

The goalkeeper made an error against Monza in the Coppa Italia and was also considered responsible for a goal conceded against Fiorentina.

The Italian newspaper accepts that goalkeeping is an unforgiving position where mistakes receive considerable attention, but has urged Perri to avoid falling into what it describes as a "black hole of anxiety".

Interestingly, some responsibility for his struggles has been directed towards Leeds.

Perri received limited opportunities from Farke during the second half of last season, and La Stampa believes that prolonged period without competitive football damaged his confidence and rhythm.

Despite his mistakes, there is currently little suggestion that Torino are ready to abandon their faith in Perri.

The Italian club have several younger goalkeepers further down the hierarchy, meaning the Brazilian remains their established first choice.

There have also been encouraging moments.

Perri produced two important saves against Fiorentina, providing glimpses of the qualities that persuaded Torino to pursue him so aggressively during the summer.

The challenge now is finding consistency.

Perri's performances are also significant for Leeds because of the structure of his transfer.

Torino possess an option to sign the goalkeeper permanently for €16m, meaning a successful season in Serie A could eventually deliver another substantial transfer fee to the Yorkshire club.

A prolonged run of mistakes could make Torino less inclined to exercise that option.

For now, though, Perri has both the starting position and the club's backing necessary to rebuild his confidence.

Perri now has an opportunity to settle into his role as Torino's first-choice goalkeeper and put his early errors behind him.

With the Italian club continuing to trust him, regular football could provide exactly what was missing towards the end of his Leeds spell. A strong recovery would also suit Leeds, who have a significant financial interest in Torino deciding to make the move permanent.
