Tottenham secure Lucas Bergvall future after midfielder makes transfer U-turn

Tottenham have secured the long-term future of Lucas Bergvall after the midfielder signed a new contract following his dramatic change of heart over leaving the club.

The Sweden international had asked to leave Spurs earlier in the summer amid uncertainty over his role under Roberto De Zerbi. Tottenham resisted that request and rejected multiple approaches for the 20-year-old.

Talks with De Zerbi subsequently helped change Bergvall's position, and he has now committed himself to Tottenham until 2032, with his new contract also including a significant pay rise.

Bergvall's previous Tottenham contract already ran until 2031, meaning Spurs were under no immediate pressure to negotiate fresh terms.

However, his importance to De Zerbi's plans and the interest he attracted during the summer convinced the club to reward him with an improved agreement.

The midfielder explained that Tottenham's current project was a major factor behind his decision to stay.

"I think we're building something great here," Bergvall said. "It's an exciting time for the club and that's why I'm happy to extend my contract.

"I'm always trying to achieve as much as possible, to be the best version of myself both on and off the pitch and I know this is the right place to do that."

His decision represents a significant turnaround after he had expressed a desire to leave earlier in the transfer window.

Tottenham maintained throughout the summer that they did not want to sell Bergvall despite the midfielder's initial wish to move elsewhere.

Conversations with De Zerbi ultimately helped convince the Swedish youngster that his development could continue in north London.

Bergvall is now targeting greater attacking output as he attempts to establish himself as an increasingly influential member of the Spurs midfield.

"Personally, my goal is to produce more for the team - performances, goals and assists - to help as much as I can," he added.

"I'm getting better every day in training and I'm looking forward to what will be a really good season ahead."

De Zerbi has also made clear why Tottenham were determined to keep the midfielder.

The Italian highlighted Bergvall's mentality and willingness to take responsibility, while acknowledging that there remain areas of his game requiring further development.

"Every day in training you can see Lucas' desire to learn, improve and push himself to the highest level," De Zerbi said.

"Lucas is brave, he wants responsibility and has the personality to play in big moments."

The Tottenham boss believes Bergvall still has considerable room to improve, adding that his "best football is still ahead of him".

That faith appears to have been crucial in turning a potential summer departure into a new long-term commitment.

Bergvall is not the only important Tottenham player to have agreed fresh terms since the end of last season.

New captain Micky van de Ven has committed his future to Spurs, while Pedro Porro has also signed a new contract.

Securing Bergvall provides another indication that Tottenham are attempting to protect the core of the squad being built under De Zerbi.

For a player who had been considering his future only months ago, the new agreement also represents a major vote of confidence from the club.

Bergvall can now focus entirely on establishing himself under De Zerbi after the uncertainty surrounding his future was removed.

The midfielder has already identified goals and assists as areas where he wants to make a greater contribution. Tottenham's decision to improve a contract that still had several years remaining demonstrates how highly they value his potential.
