Lucas Bergvall earns major Tottenham pay rise after rejecting summer exit

Lucas Bergvall has strengthened his commitment to Tottenham by signing a new contract until 2031 after a summer in which his future in north London had been uncertain.

The 20-year-old had previously been tied to Spurs until 2029 but wanted greater opportunities for regular football after falling down the pecking order following Roberto De Zerbi’s arrival.

Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest were reportedly among the clubs interested in taking advantage, but Tottenham refused to entertain approaches and have instead rewarded Bergvall with significantly improved terms.

According to Swedish outlet Fotbollskanalen, Bergvall will now earn around £100,000 per week.

That represents a substantial increase from his previous reported salary of approximately €2million per year. His new annual earnings are placed at around €6.04m, effectively representing a 200% increase if the earlier figures are accurate.

It demonstrates Tottenham's determination to retain a midfielder they originally signed from Djurgårdens IF in 2024.

Bergvall quickly established himself during his debut campaign, making 45 appearances and helping Spurs win the Europa League.

His situation has changed since then. He remained involved under Thomas Frank last season but has found regular minutes more difficult following De Zerbi's appointment in March.

That reduced playing time contributed to uncertainty surrounding Bergvall during the summer.

The midfielder publicly stressed his desire for continuous football in his preferred position without directly confirming that he wanted to leave Tottenham.

Newcastle and Nottingham Forest reportedly made approaches, but Spurs decided against selling.

That decision is particularly notable after Tottenham spent more than €350m rebuilding De Zerbi's squad during the summer.

Rather than allowing Bergvall to become another departure, the club have now protected one of their most valuable young players with a deal running until 2031.

Bergvall has made five appearances this season, and his next challenge is turning Tottenham's long-term financial commitment into a more significant role under De Zerbi.

Bergvall's new contract removes much of the immediate uncertainty surrounding his Tottenham future.

Attention now turns to his playing time. After Spurs rejected summer interest and significantly improved his contract, Bergvall will be hoping to establish a more regular place in De Zerbi's team.
